too cold to come out!

Recommended Posts

went to my usual haunt yesterday and at the request of the farmer attempted to get some rabbits out of the old dry stone walls. found it very hard work for me as there was still alot of cover around the walls and felt in a way it was harder work for the ferrets. seems that they have alot more work to do around areas like this that the normal flat tidy burry. the actual rabbits that i did managed to flush out were not older experienced rabbits but alot of this seasons younger ones.was pleased that i took the jack russell as she was very good at marking in situations like this and refused to move from specific spots where the rabbits were hiding. i guess without the dog i would have been stuffed! also because of the areas i used alot more poke nets that purse nets as i needed the extra allowance in the size of the poke net otherwise i would have lost the rabbits i did manage to flush out. made a plain old day hard work but rewarding in a way. the wife wasnt amused though came straight home and went to bed as i was pooped! decent 10 rabbit haul so off to the butchers to trade them in for pennines :boogy:

Another reason I need a dog, as when we are doing the walls we just have to guess and try them all, many of course are empty.

Its good to see you have a ready market for them. ;)

a good marking dog is worth it weight in gold to me...these days.

sometimes my dog marks really well but on other days she just marks the ones shes seen go in...its great if you have a dog that is 100% reliable on the mark.saves a lot of time and effort in big places.

i know if my dog is marking there is deffo something in there..without doubt.

Good day out there matey

I woke up this morn and looked out of the window, and it was the first morning all year that has really looked like a proper day for ferreting, with frost coating everything in sight

As for marking dogs, we would be stuffed without ours, we have a lot of warrens here and many are used but dont hold. The dog tell us which are occupied, which holes the rabbits are nearest to, and which holes they are going to bolt from when they strt moving, and that's before they even grab them, run them down etc. One of the dog even tells us if there is more than one rabbit down there

tegater - if you ever fancy a day out with a dog or two in tow, give us a shout and we will happily make the drive up for a cuppa and a mooch about, it's always nice t meet tidy folk
