Elmer_Fudd 28
Hello, i have recently bought a BSA Ultra Multi-Shot, it came at the right price hence my choice for first pcp. I basically wondered if some one could run through basic gun maintenance, recommend products i might need and the basic care of a pcp. many thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
mikeyblue 28
Hi Gaz, Good choice, the Ultra is a little cracker. Regards maintanance, for me its a matter of, . Make sure fill probe is clean of debris on filling. You dont want any grit getting into the seals etc. Wipe over the action with an oily rag after an outing to keep pitting at bay. A clean of the barrel if you find your grouping opening up or are getting to many flyers. Thats it really mate, pretty bog standard stuff! Mikey. Quote Link to post
Elmer_Fudd 28
Thanks mate ... would you recommend any certain oil? Cheers Mike Quote Link to post
mikeyblue 28
3 in 1 works well for me pal! Mikey Quote Link to post
Phil8282 8
First off, take it out of the stock, oil it over well with Parker Hale gun oil, Napier VP90 oil or good old 3 in 1. Either of the first 2 are preferred as they contain corrosion inhibitors. For a first time you can get the kitchen towel pretty soaking in oil as if it's new chances are its been sitting on a shelf for a few months with no oil so small amounts of rust will have deposited onto the metal. Also the rust is created when the steel is blued and it is not cleaned off well enough. Wipe it down repeatedly until you get no rust deposits on the kitchen towel. Finally wipe it over with a small amount of oil, just enough to leave a light covering on the surface, you don't need to wipe over all the gun, just the barrel and air tube as the Aluminum won't rust. I suggest cleaning the barrel with some cleaning patches on a pull through, small sections of cotton on a pull through made of strimmer wire or string fishing line are best. Do not use brass brushes as they are far to agressive for airgun barrels. Pull the patches through until they come out clean, now you can add a small amount of oil to the patches and pull through again, this cleans out the last bits of oil and deposits. BSA use alot of oil in the barrels and you won't get good groups without cleaning them out. As for general maintenance just oil over every time the guns handled. Remove from stock and allow to dry in a warm place after wiping off all excess moisture if it gets rained on. Also if it gets cold do not put it away straight away, leave it out at room temperature and wipe off periodically as condensation will occur upon the cold surfaces. Also remove from stock when you do this to totally remove all moisture. Also lubrication of the pellet probe seal can be good just to make it survive abit longer, the latest magazines to tend to chew up the seals abit because of the auto indexing. I think thats virtually everything Quote Link to post
Elmer_Fudd 28
Dear phil8282, Thank you for the comprehensive message there was good mate, i presume the wipes are available from a gun shop as well? i have noticed that my safety is pretty stiff is this normal? regards Gareth Phil8282 Quote Link to post
Phil8282 8
Yeah they should be, if not look on Ebay! Yes unfortunatley the newer guns do often have very stiff safety catches! It will work in with use. The ball bearing is fitted to the side of the trigger block where it protrudes into 2 recesses on the safety plate, flicking "S-F" moves the recess over the ball bearing , causing the clicking! Sit there and tick tock it for a while and it will work looser. Unfortunatley both the ball and the plate are hardened steel so filing them smoother is near impossible with hand tools, I am working on some mods but none are easy! Glad to be of help!
