Guest Lurchers2006
Well I have a bit of a problem, my dog has never been the best of retrievers but it didnt bother me as he was putting plenty of bunnies in the bag.Last week I was just walking him across some fields when he caught a half grown rabbit, he then proceeded to feck off across the field, lay down and eat it!! I tried calling him, walking away etc.. but eventually my patience wore thin and I walked over to get him but every time I got close hed feck off again!! He eat the whole thing then came back, I thought this was a once off but today he did the exact same thing!! Why has he suddenly started to do this? He's had a very good first season but however good he is at catching them I cant be putting up with this! Oh and before someone says it he's not starving or anything he's well fed. Quote Link to post

juckler123 707
Had a couple of dogs over the years that have done this but just with young rabbits up to half grown yet both would retrieve full grown uns as a result i never feed rabbit unless its either minced or cooked and skinned never had this problem since Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
If you feed whole rabbit, then your dog will sometimes become boss and take it away to eat it. I allways skin rabbit and gut it before giving it to the dog, seems to work. I know of a fella on here that it hapened to aswell. The dog did not stay long, but that case, was uncurable i think. Whats he like with hares he catches, or dont you bother with them? Frank. Quote Link to post
leec 132
do rabbit him with terriers much in the daylight i had a pup do this for abit when they caught a rabbit the terriers would sometimes rag it abit and the pup soon followed suit but a couple of firm reminders and abit of time an patience and now she is only 5 an half months a retrieving anything even feather be patient mate Quote Link to post
Guest Lurchers2006
Ye it was young rabbits he did it with so as you say hopefully he'll stop, When he retrieves them he comes into 5 or 6 foot and just stand there with the rabbit alive in his mouth, if I walk towards him he walks away, Its like he thinks he's the boss and its his rabbit? I have the whole summer ahead of me to sort this out, anymore advice is welcome! Oh and Frank I dont really bother with them unless they get up infront of me, hes had a few in the daytime but is not exactly a daytime hare dog. Quote Link to post
