DanRaistrick 53
my girlfriends dad found a ferret yesterday that had been abandoned in the carpark at his work. as i have ferrets he rang and asked if i wanted it or they were just going to let it go, so i said id take the little guy in. got him home and he didnt look in a good state, he was all dirty and his coat didnt look too good and he was a bit thin. so i put him in the spare hutch with food water and bedding etc. upon inspecting him this morning ive found he's covered in ticks. where can i buy a tick remover? and will i need to get some treatment for him and my other ferrets and dog just in case? theres about 10 or so on him, will he be ok after removing them or will he bleed a lot? cheers Dan Quote Link to post
DanRaistrick 53
also it would be greatly appreciated if somebody local to me in the Darlington area could possibly come and help me with removing the ticks as i havent done it before Quote Link to post
joe14 98
Remove them with a tick remover and get some frontline spray from the vets and put some on a glove and rub it into his fur when you've removed them. You can get tick removers from petshop, vet, ebay will be the cheapest. Or you can jus rub frontline onto him and wait untill they drop off. Hope someone can help. Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
Out of interest what is the frontline and what does it do? Is it just called frontline spray? Sounds like it's worth keeping a bottle in. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
joe14 98
Yep, frontline spray, the spot ons are too strong for ferrets. http://www.vetuk.co.uk/pet-meds-prescription-only-frontline-spray-c-21_730/frontline-100ml-spray-p-543 Obviously you cant buy it without perscription but if you can just ring vets and ask to collect some. Say its for the cat. Theese are tick removers http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TICK-TWISTER-TICK-REMOVER-PET-DOG-CAT-HUMANS-TWO-HOOKS-/260808996925?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&hash=item3cb96d783d Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks Joe. How do you use the fronline? Just spray the ferrets with it? And is it a preventative? Or do you use the spray to remove/kill fleas and ticks? Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post
joe14 98
You can use it as a preventive and it kills fleas & ticks aswell. Spray some onto some plastic gloves and rub it into the ferrets fur, the ticks will drop off after couple of days. Or you can remove them and then use frontline on the ferret to kill any you've missed and a preventive. Quote Link to post

ryhope toma 42
cost about £4 Dan couple of squirts use it for couple of days and jobs done Quote Link to post
muddy210 34
front line spray is the one you want but you need to get the ticks off first with the remover then spray them to get rid of any that you have missed otom tick puller is the one you want dont use the spot on if you can get the spray the spray is far superior Quote Link to post
ferret100 47
Only give 2-3 sprays of Frontline ONCE for the ferret. Over-do the Frontline and you could well end up with a dead ferret. This is why Frontline Spray is a veterinary prescription medicine only and why vets do not readily give it to ferret owners....too much kills animals.
