[NO TEXT TALK] else using jacks in the beaters line?? im using 2 and they both work really well flushing pheasants all day and seem to really enjoy it

I have used mine beating and he will retrieve (can't get the fecker off him though) but it won't look good if they drop to ground mid wood especially if its on something they shouldn't or wind a fox and crash straight through the wood at the end of the drive when your trying to get the birds to come out steadily. I used to use my old border a lot for beating and he was ok but when some toffs lab came over with its hackles up he couldn't help himself and went straight for the throat i'm sure the mad sod was racist coz it was always the black labs

Luckly iv known the keeper all my life! My oldest jack works better than most spaniels but like yours she dont take no shit from black labs so maybe they are! :-)

rokiller, I'm glad you're having a good time beating with your jack russell, but if it works better than most spaniels I'd suggest spaniels ain't up to much round your way!

My point about spaniels is that my jack is steady working her way through where most springers iv ever met are nuts! We have a clumber over our shoot which is the most steady dog iv ever seen! I ment springers not spaniels as a whole.

Nothing quite like a terrier working a thick hedge, putting a strong cock bird up and standing stock still watching it as it rises, still motionless as the bird is shot. Then cast off to find the fallen bird, taking a good line and using its nose to find it's prize. Alls perfect and guns look on in amazement.................

I use these two,but not Russells tho !as Lab says' not Spaniels,but good in tree fells,tight spots they have their use,good at clearing pen.

I try to work mine tight,I think once they hit a certain distance the control goes!deafness kicks in..Still I'm made welcome,Guns don't mind, so I contribute to a good day hopefully .A big organised shoot, I would think twice, although I have every confidence in them .

would they hunt in the same style as a springer/cocker??..ie able to be sent into thick cover and run along in front of you at a reasonable pace and not annoyingly around for feet and to be trained on a whistle..don't really mean for retrieving

I use my two jacks while i'm beating. They also do a great job ratting the release pens at the end of the season. The terrain is difficult at our shoot and we have about 8 terriers in the beating line!

 

Not as efficient as a spaniel, however, they can be useful!

No doubt in the right hands they could ,what do you think Lab,a challenge ?,but never to the standard of any Gun Breed,It's like taking a S.J. on the Road,they'll do,but the place for them is in a field..

I quite believe that any dog, well any small dog could do a job in the beating line. Especially with the drive of a russell. The part i find funny is when people say there better than gundogs at there own game......yes maybe a shite pet owners 'gundog' but not one bred for purpose.....
