Anyone got any good tips on cleaning the inside of ferrets ears?Had the young hob out there for a run around and noticed he had a build up of dirt in his ears, tried to lightly brush it of with damp cotton buds but he was having none of it lol?

cheers bud i will keep at it and yeah i am only lightly rolling it across the build up to clear it out in small amounts instead of dabbing around his ear.

I just use olive oil, the one you get for your own ears from wilko. Im guesing the cooking stuff is just the same?

Put it in a syringe and put a couple of drops in each ear rub the ear gently to massage it down.

It will soften all the wax and it will come upto the surface. Vet told me to do this to prevent ear mites. The others will also give their ears a good cleaning after aswell.

If it has got ear mites you will need to get stronghold or the beaphar stuff to kill the mites.

Dont ever go inside the ears. & its best to scruff them whilst your doing it.

lol...seeing as you dragged me into this anyway ;) The Beaphar Spot On will treat ear mites, you're right there.

Generally I never fuss too much over earwax, it serves a purpose after all. As I've a few ferts, if I see a wax build-up, I rub some ferrets formula over the outside of the ears, ferts have cleaned each other up by next morning. Syringing oil into the ear canal will loosen deep wax, but unless you clear all the oil out of the ear canal it can cause more problems. Mites can usually cause a very itchy fert, maybe head tilting and thick red/dark brown goo in the ear. But as Jamie m said, Beaphar will sort ear mites. I cheat, if I need to clean/treat ears, put ferrets formula on their tummies and work away...they aren't bothered and it gives two hands to work with. Atb.
