Ideation 8,217
As my idiot dog is back in working order (well . . . mostly), i thought i would make the most of it while it lasts. Got back from work pretty late, but still had a couple of hours light, so decided to take him to a bit of woodland on a small holding that i recently got permission from. It's funny, as i have been hopping the fence into this patch of wood for a while, and after the last time i had left it, i stopped to have a look at some ponys and ended up running into the owner who gave me permission. So without having to skulk about in the trees a long the fenceline, i decided to go down by the house and let the dog have a rake about. Parked the car up, and jumped into a paddock, letting the dog off to do his thing, he had a scan about and then fecked off to go and have a nose about. Followed him into the wood and he was marking a nice, but fairly large set, under some fallen trees and a long a broken fence. Netted up and let one of the jills go, and after a fair while the first bunny banged out and hit a net, which i grabbed. The jill left the hole behind it and made her way across the ground, and then shot down another hole, pretty much instantly bolting a second rabbit from an adjacent hole. Ferret out and nets off and we moved on. Had a good chase on some cock pheasants which the dog always enjoys but they all took to the air to live another day, heading back toward the estate. After a bit the dog started showing interest in another set of only four holes on a banking, giving a mark on one of the holes and a mark on a piece of bare earth, which was a bit odd, until i prodded it with my boot and it started to crumble away, revealing another bolt hole, which i would have missed if it had not been for him. Nets on, and ferret in, and then it went quiet for a long time. . . . . . Then whoosh and the first rabbit slams the net, pulls the ped out and drops down the bank, and is in the process of attempting to f**k off, but no luck, the little black ninja launches himself off the top of the bank and snatches bunnykins up before he can get into his stride. I notice the ferret at the mouth of the hole looking at us oddly, blood on her face. Inspect the bolted rabbit and no blood? Ferret about turns and goes back down and as i'm climbing up the bank, rabbit number two, minus it's eyes tries to make a break for it, on top of the bank but is soundly netted and held by mutt until i get there. Obviously she had chewed one rabbits eyes out and left it to chase the other. . . . Nets off and continued my walk, getting a feel for the land and seeing what was about, not much really. Spent a while enjoying the sunset and giving a couple of exmoor ponies a scratch, and then made my way back to the car as the light was fading. Almost back to the car, the dog started marking another set, two holes in the field, three in the hedge. Unfortunatly the light had gone by this point, but never one to leave a good mark, i netted the two in the field and left the dog there, and jumped into the hedge, guided by the light on my mobile phone. So phone held between teeth, i managed to net up the holes in the thick bracken etc in the hedge and entered a jill, and after about 30 seconds of almighty banging rabbit the final rabbit of the eve, crashed the net right by my feet and squeels fit to wake the dead. Nets off and a stumble back to the car in the dark. An enjoyable hour or so out. Atb. Some crap photos - 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
Cheers guys! It's good to be able to get back out now the dog is in one piece again, i hope it lasts (touch wood!). KR - The silver jill has come into her own this season, she has really come out of her shell, she is around 2 now, and is one of those jills that is super lazy, and has that wierd sleeping sickness where you can't wake them up, even with shaking and they look dead, but when she works she suddenly comes alive and really likes to bully a rabbiit. The White one, is my old faithful Ruby, shes a good age now, and maybe starting to slow down a bit, but i took a litter off her this year and have a couple of promising kits from her ready to start. The father is out of johnnyboys line, so i know both sides of the mating are spot on and i am confident the kits will be crackers. I gave one to youngtom and she is firing on all cylinders at 4/5 months. Lampingkid - meant to? I don't understand? You ferret when you can, ideally dawn till dusk, but if not, you just take what you can, when you can. Better than sitting in the house. Seany - that chest freezer the rabbits are on is a good size mate, holds a good few hundred But i do have a back up for later in the season Mind you i go through about 3 rabbits a day. 1 Quote Link to post

Aye mate, i'm a big fan of the old lunch time lamping session, i find you catch the bunnys off guard. He's mostly in functioning order again, but has definatly slowed down, time will tell if it's just a lack of fitness from being layed up or if he has f****d himself a bit.
