first trip of the season

Recommended Posts

well, after a call from my mate asking do i fancy it,i couldnt say no! ive been holding off as long as i can. so after a 5.30am start we netted up the first of the small sets and after a few seconds rabbit number 1. we moved on and found a few holes along a hedge and we took a few more. after looking at a few more smaller sets we decided to leve them for another day as the cover was still to thick to reach most of the holes and made way to a fairly large sett we know always hold a good few. after putting down around 60 nets and discovering i had forgotten mine.........we had a fair few un netted exits. so ahead we went and entered 6 of the 9 ferrets and action was instant. i say action but all hell broke loose we just could not keep up with the netted rabbits, dispatch them and re set the nets in time as they were bolting right left and center in 3's and 4's so after an hour of madness it all slowed down and we started to lift the ferrets as they emerged, and waited 10 mins to find the last 2.....and nothing, so out came the trusty old locater and gave us one mark at 3 footso a short dig down found us 2 rabbits and a red ferret in a stop end the jill was boxed and the search for the last ferret was on......click click click said the box and gave a depth of 5 foot. so i soldiered on with the digging and at around 4 foot checked we was still in the right place and nothing.......she had moved 2 foot to the left and dropped to 8 foot! so the sleeves got rolled up and i got stuck in again. and all 8 foot was dug to find NOTHING! so i checked the box and it told me she was still in place so a carried on and then this thing popped out of the wall of the hole near the bottom.. a rabbit leg, so i gave it a tug and that was another in the bag, after retreiving the jill i reached in to find 2 more curled up and they to were added to the bag...enogh was enough and we called it a day. 22 was the final tally and if we had taken more nets and a long net we could have managed a good 40 plus, but never mind they will be there for another day.

Well done matey! Good bag that and sounds a good day, like you said, you can't catch them all. But do you not have dogs???
yes mate but my lurcher is laid up and my collie is still only a young pup.also we cant take dogs on this particular permo as the bowman is worried about his cattle. Not ideal but it still puts meat in the freezer

Thanks lads, 22 is an average sized bag from off this permission, we only hit it at the start and end of the season with no more than 4 or5 trips and it gives us good results year in year out, with the occasional big bag, 78 is the best its given us with a few 50' s too.one day it may give us the magical 100 but who knows. As long as the boss man is happy and my freezer is full I Wont care, atb mart
