Just been for a wander with Tilly and my jill, on arriving saw a bloody big buzzard circling about a hedgerow in the middle of the field so wasn't hopeful about seeing anything in the open but at that time of day there's never anything out in the open anyway. As I approached there were about 6 or 7 quails making a run for it before taking off, so the buzzard must have been after them.

Wandering round, dog not showing too much interest in any warrens but I ran the jill through them anyway just to give her a bit of exercise more than anything else. Half an hour into the session dog gives a real positive mark in a set of brambles on a bank, even tries to enter them which she doesn't normally do but they're too thick. So, making the dog stay at the bottom I climb to the top and enter the jill before going back down to the bottom to keep watch. There goes jill, enters a warren slap bang in the middle of the brambles and out pops a rabbit from an exit 6 foot away from the one jill has just gone in, she pops out after the rabbit which goes back into the original hole and so begins a benny hill style persuit. In out in out in out, I have to give it to the jill, she is bloody fast! And then the rabbit tries to make a run for it, dog ready to pounce but the jill is to quick and grabs hold of the rabbit.....out comes the rabbit and the jill is on its back buckaroo style. They both came tumbling down the embankment against the fence and into a small patch of brambles at the bottom. I climb the fence but ain't sticking my hand in a patch of brambles with a ferret and a rabbit tussling, never been bitten yet and I want it to stay that way! Jill forced rabbit onto its back and has hold of throat for 30 seconds or so and then releases her grip and starts making her way out. I have a quick look and it's still bloody breathing............nooooo! just as I go to make a lunge it got up and legged it back up the embankment.....bugger! a braver man would have been having rabbit pie for tea today!

No more marks and no more rabbits seen. Nice way to spend my dinner break though, and watching the chase through the brambles was quality! Decided all my ferrets are going to be albino from now on. Just easier to keep your eye on what they're doing in cover. I'm definitely starting to get addicted to working ferrets above ground!! So, nice easy wander for the dog and early night for us all tonight ready for lamping at 4am tomorrow and ferreting afterwards
