undisputed 1,664
Finally got my season under way last week at the tail end of that Huricaine. My truck has been of the road for a few weeks and is in the garage. All my lamps are in the truck....I was over speaking to the mechanic about getting it sorted and forgot to pick the lamp up. Anyway asked the Mrs to pick it up for me when I was at work and she said she'd try I had been watching the trees bend back all day and was looking forward to getting out with the dog. She's been injured the best part of a yr now and finally seems to be over it. So got home....no bloody lamp...couple of phone calls and managed to secure one for the night. So off we pop went to a nice wee bit about 70miles from where I live, I managed to persuade Anythingoes to come out and brining his new pup with him for the experience. So we arrive at destination the wind is kick really hard....so far so good. First run easy catch to get the dogs eye in staight back with a half grown rabbit. Took the bunny and let it go for another night and carried on thinking the bigger ones would be just around the corner. Well the best laid plans and all that crap never saw another bunny until we were two mile up the road, which was unusual. Finally found a few out in the field but as soon as the lamp hit them off they went to the safety of the wood. Saw a squatter out in the field and sent the dog out quick turn and pick up and back with another green half grown bunny. Let this one go too and carried on. Just out of the beam two big orange eyes lit up and after a quick squeak it started to motor toward us. Unfortunately due to the ban I had to let it pass but it's still good to know I can still brining them in just the same. Well things started to go down hill pretty quickly after this as the beam started to fade on the lamp. Shit I thought what's going on the battery is relatively new and fully charged...must be the lamp. Now the lamp I usually have is one of those cluelite jobs which are pretty reliable but tonight I'm using Anythingoes Striker lamp which I am not familiar with. I was thinking that maybe I had drained the battery or I had picked my pld knackerd one up by mistake...anyway beam finally goes and we head back to the car empty handed (wishing I had held on to the half growers). About halfway back I flick the lamp back on and it comes on fine...turns to Anythingoes who explains that the battery not being used for a bit has retained a bit of a charge. On we go and 5mins from the car I flick the lamp on again and it's working fine spy another rabbit in the dunes slip the dog fine catch and retreive...yet another green half grown bunny didn't have the heart to dispatch this one so let it go as well. As we get to the car another lamper turns up and heads up to where we came from. On the way back home we get's talking and plug the lamp into the car to have a look in the fields when Anythingoes has a brainwave. He points to his lamp and tells me it has a f*****g dimmer switch on it and I had accidently moved it all the way round cutting of the beam. Like I said I was unfamiliar with the lamps workings. I suppose thats what I get for borrowing someone else's gear but all in all it was a good exercise and the dog performed ok and had no ill effects from her long lay off. I went the following day and picked my gear up from the garage just need the weather now.
