oman 23
Hi all just looking some advice on when is the best time to cut shanks for stick making. I know that some people say "when you see it cut it or someone else will cut it" but what time should we be cutting shanks. Cheers

moxy 617
Hi im a green woodworker and hedgelayer and the best time to cut any sticks is once the leaf has fallen and the sap has stopped rising. As a green woodworker, could you explain the benefits or pro's and cons as to cutting when not in leaf? Other than aiding the drying time? Cheers
brassring 2
When the sap is up and in leaf the bark will shrink and crinkle when drying as opposed to staying smooth, the wood itself will season better and be easier to work when cut in autumn/winter also the hazel stool you cut from will grow back better the following spring. Hope this helps
