anychance of some help from you more experianced net makers.i have made hundreds of purse nets ,thirty or so fox nets and a gate net but now i want to move onto bigger things.so i have decided to start small and make a 25 yrd long net with 100% bagging.i am going to use a 2 or 2 1/8inch mesh what do you guys reccomend.how many meshes deep and how many long for 50yrds would you also recomend. i have been told by people that they start the net of on a split ring and i like this idea but were can i get one from and is there anything else i could use which are easy to get hold of (pics please of what you use) also whats the best knot to start the net of with and do i tie the following hoopes like i do a purse net when tieing straight onto a ring then just slide them off when i need to.is there any good dvds worth getting about long net making and net making in general.thanks in advance :thumbs-up:

Rew,

I would use 15 meshes wide all the way from start to finish, in 2 1/4" mesh. I would also knit a line of heavier selvedge on top and bottom afterwards to make it more durable, before fitting the top and bottom lines.

You could start the net off as normal on a ring and then cut it off (?) or start on a split ring and unthread it.

I don't start a long net off on a ring at all but just knit a row and the cast off to row below (a bit like knitting a net one row wide) - you will have to experiment with how many rows to do as it will reduce by a third - but when you gather up all of the 'side meshes' you will find that you have a net already 3 rows deep by 15 meshes wide. Does that make sense?

Then just keep on knitting! Once you have done a yard or two then put a loop of twine round it so you don't end up knitting at the end of your street whilst the end stays in your house!!

I would make a 50 yard net 100 yards long preferably, but some will use 75 yards, it is up to you.

Rew, i have never made a longnet, BUT, if i was then the book called Net making for sport by Howard Glynn would be my first port of call, very detailed, lots of photos, secondly i have not seen it but Mick Mansbridge made a dvd about net making etc which i am told is pretty good. :thumbs-up:

As for a split ring REW you dont need to use one I bend up a ring about 2 or 3 inches in diameter from an old wire clothes hanger like what you get from the dry cleaners. I use it because 15 stitches dont fit on a small ring well and I use a large needle that I made it saves having to refill so often :drink:
