Foxing with Shotguns, following the Combines.

Recommended Posts

never saw the vid but id say it is great proof that hunting is far humane than shooting full stop and they ban hunting believe me folks shooting foxes will soon be on there list to ban a fox will suffer a lot longer than it would with the dog

You should support anyones right to hunt, be it with Ferrets, Terriers, Hounds, Lurchers, Airrifles, Shotguns or Rifles... whatever.

It was 24ºc, rock hard ground, with 2 combines working through a field thats hedge to hedge with Rape. You couldn't run a pack of hounds and horses through there even if you wanted to.... So therefore no use at this point to a keeper thats got birds coming in a few days time.

BUT there's large tracts of woodland on the estate that I can't run with the lurcher or even shoot effectively... this is where the Hunt and also a Local lad thats digs withTerriers come into their own helping the keeper out.

Different methods for differant situations. Don't be so blinkered....

I was getting at the method used, infact it looked very productive but your mate missed it when it was sat still, he missed it twice actually and he wasn't any further away. I'm sure a few steps more and a final shot would have made the video look a whole lot better..... :good:

AAA OR SSG if your not skilled enough to take headshots!

I never shoot foxes in the head with a shotgun, they take some shot if shot in the head. I always go for the engine room with 3 1/2" winchester xxx number 1's. Although it's getting difficult to get hold of them now i managed to get 3 boxes of ten for a quid a cartridge last week. The express 42gr 1's or 3's are also very good. As already mentioned the BB's just don't carry enough shot resulting in a very poor pattern in most guns.

yes muffed shot/shots then took too long before the finishing head shot.

not a fan of BB would never have happened with these http://www.saga.es/angles/gama/centri.asp?pro=34&fami=7 or old fashioned AAA.

Those SAGA cartridges are only 36g loads? that seems very light? and as the actual size of the balls is 8.65mm their twice the size of BB shot (4.5mm per ball). That means it would be about 8 pellets compared to the BB's 50 per oz. AAA are better than the saga '00' at about 36 pellets per oz.

I don't see how you feel that fewer pellets travelling slower would be a better cartridge for running fox than was originally used???

yes light load cause you dont need 42g and 50g loads like BBs, at up to 30 yds devastating get some and see.

I struggle to see how these would be more effective than BB's. The pattern would be very sparse. through tight chokes the percentage of mishaped pellets would be hugh, hence the number of fliers would blow the pattern. I know how devastating they would be on impact, just getting them on target in the first place is too much of a lottery. Remember, it patterns that kill, not just shot size. I have seen many foxes shot with "just" 32g of 5's at 30 yards and most didn't get to far!

Thank you for the positive comments, glad I'm getting some of it right! as for the negative comments I hope this explains in a bit more detail.

As I had stated in the original post, I don't like BB either because of the poor patterning but he's always found them ok to use, 9/10 times stopping the fox dead instantly, I just happened to film the odd one out. I'll try better next time! :duh:

Also he had to wait for the combine to turn before running in for the follow-up shot, Once they take the headland down they then just randomly cut through and turn back on themselves. I'm sure theirs good reasons for the directions they go .... I just don't know them!!! So for safety it's best to let them commit to a direction when their that close....

The reason I couldn't take the dog along is the farm manager doesn't like loose dogs in the field running quarry that might turn back into the crop, therefore stopping the harvest until the dog appears again. Although it makes sense doesn't mean you have to like the decision!!!

Hope this explains a bit more.

I can imagine that it would not only hold up the harvest but can be dangerous for the dog. I'm guessing the harvesters were contracting and that the farmer is paying for their time.

Good on you for getting out their and doing it, you should get him to hold the camera next time!
