Anyone use a HPR alongside lurchers?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Was with a guy who flys hawks yesterday and he uses a HPR dog to find the rabbits and then sends the hawks on them after he commands the dog to flush it. Anyone ever tried this with a lurcher? Using something that will hold point on a bunny out in open fields and then send the lurchers off to catch it?

Wouldn't mind seeing that,

It does'nt work like that mike, years ago I tried it with my GSP's and all that happens is it makes the pointer's start to rush in and bad habits form,my gsp's killed foxes as good as a lurcher in the end, ended up re-training them on their own and selling them to permanent shooting homes, buy a terrier decent terrier or cocker to bush with its easier, atb, wirralman

Fair enough, I just thought for walked up mouching during the day it may prove effective, the concern I was thinking would have been in the retrieve as I'd expect both dogs to be keen to be involved in that.

As for it defeating the point of having a lurcher, I dont really agree. My lurcher catches bunnys fine that he has seen or hunted up himself, he marks warrens well and is effective on the lamp. I'm not ashamed to admit that his nose finding bunnies out in the day time isn't always great. We take plenty of walked up bunnies and the ones he finds; but I'm convinced we miss a few whilst walking through the fields.

Just my opinion ATB

Its a game of opinions matey and be boring if we all had the same one :good: I would still disagree, i would expect my dog to find quarry itself if out mooching, the only time i think another type of dogwork would be beneficial is a terrier/bushing dog for pushing bunnies out of cover a bigger dog would struggle with.......
