jasper65 6
Noticed a couple of the pullets limping this morning, when I took a look both had one leg knee joint more swollen than the other. they both have full use of the leg but inflamed right at the back where the joint is? anyone seen this before as I have no idea whats caused it? they have a decent run with fresh shaving in and don't get up to much michief so I don't think its been done by any injury. jasper65 6
Cheers for that mate! here's a picture I took a few days ago showing the birds right leg swollen which I must say seems a little better now. it feels like the tendon at the back of its Hock slipped round but why It would do that I have no idea

I'm a bit concerned as to how it came about. two went down the same but the rest are ok, there is nowhere for them to injure themselves so I'm a bit miffed why they got it.. willie thorn 102
could be an infection, staph or other bacterial infection has the bird any cuts on its legs? infections can also be caused by water, damp areas, old food and such depending on wether u wand to keep the birds antibiotics wold be a good idea!! willie thorn 102
i would also seperate the affected birds from others aswell to avoid spread of infection through food water, droppings etc. thats if it is infection just my opinion mate!
jasper65 6
I'm pretty confident now willie its a tendon problem, for some reason on this couple of birds the tendon popped out of place. I have no idea why as the rest are perfect? Could it be a inbreeding problem?
Moll. 1,793
I thought these were x bred birds Jasp?
jasper65 6
They are Moll! they can still be Inreeds if he crossed two birds from the same blood back together. Not sure if they was straight Rhode back to a Sussex or could well be <Rhode x L Sussex Brother back to Rhode x L Sussex Sister> or even worse.
willie thorn 102
it could be jasp! are they still the same or seem to be getting better?

I'm sure chances would be pretty slim though Jasp, they would have to be fairly heavily interbred, chickens are fairly robust breeding wise especially if they were from two different breeds to begin with. Has the swelling gone down any?

Has the swelling gone down any? I think your right Moll! hopefully the guy has kept them pretty much unrelated. I had three down in total! they're all in a ark together but for some reason this problem showed up. when you feel the joint its swollen but the tendon at the back of the joint has moved round to the side, it can be pushed back but its impossible to keep it there! I tried splinting one with no joy, if I put anything tighter on the legs it would cut off the blood supply. Its a strange one as it came on at a early age around 8 days mainly in one leg, I had one which had it in both which has now been euthanized as has another, it leaves me one more which doesn't seem as bad, this is one of the few Hens so I'm try desperately trying to get her right
