fcuktheban 140
That's a good looking pup. First thing I would do is get him used to the ferret so he won't want to eat it later. Quote Link to post

KittleRox 2,147
Aye get him used to the ferrets and just do the basics with him the now, don,t worry about the hunting side of things at the moment, just let him be a pup, as for marking you can,t really train the dog, just learn to read the signs the dog gives you when out ferreting, as I,ve said though don,t worry about that side of stuff until he,s ready to enter, atb Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
As said, get him used to ferrets, and if he has had a bad start socialize him well, with other dogs, live stock, people etc. He's still a pup at the moment so he has a long old road to go. As a daytime dog, get him out as much as possible, working on his recall and a bit of retrieving as time goes on. Get him experiencing as much as possible, it's all good learning, gates, hedges, streams, ditches, cover, holes, he will need to cope with them all in time so the earlier he starts to get used to the big wide world, the more relaxed he will be when work starts. When he starts to mature, and is broken to the ferrets etc, take him out, even if you have to tie him up to start, let him watch and listen, it's amazing what they will pick up from just that, they are smart animals. The only way to get him marking is to expose him to as many rabbits, rabbit holes and best yet, rabbits going into or coming out of holes as possible, hopefully it will just click. When you think he is steady and ready, get him holding bolters in the net, but teach him a release command if you can. Also get him used to a "theres another one legging it over there mate" command. Most (including myself) use a sharp hiss, as soon as the dogs hear it they know to drop what they are doing and look for the runner. Good luck. Ferreting without a dog is shit in comparison, and once you have one, you will never go back. Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
I'm going through the same now mate. I've got a 10 week whippet pup here. I'm introducing her to the ferrets at every chance. Been trying some retrieve but she's messing about so I'll just keep working on it. She wasn't interested in a teddy and I had a rabbit skin left over and she goes mad for it. Going to buy a dummy covered in rabbit skin to help along. There's a lot of people on here which know a lot and will help you out. They give sound advice and have been in the game longer than I've been alive. Just listen to what they say and the most important thing I've been told with any animal is to let them be a pup/kit and train them slowly so they don't even know they're getting trained. If you get 2 retrieves from 2 foot away then be happy and leave things on a good note. If the pup ain't interested then leave it for the next day. All advice I've been given and taken in. Good luck.
