jasper65 6
Just picked up a 501 off ebay but it seems its had its anti backwind removed, also noticed there is no drag either . I had one of these reels in the earley 's and loved it to bits! this one on the other hand seems a bit useless with no drag and just backwind. out of interest is this why the drag won't work because the anti backwind has been removed? anyone else got a ABU closed Face who might know what parts I would need to replace thr Anti Backwind? Definitley classics Wilf . I would have liked the 506 but My brother brought me one in the late 70's and like a pratt I loaned it out in the 90's and never saw it again, it was still in the box with the spanner and spare spool too ., I wanted a 501 for sentimental reasons as well as to fish. I paid £15 for it all in Inc P&P, the guy never mentioned the anti backwind was removed and basically sold it as a original untouched. I can't get the drag to work either but I'm thinking if the Anti Backwind was removed this might also effect the drag? any help on this would be apreciated before I have a moan at him Jasp Quote Link to post
WILF 51,345
Dont take my word for it mate, but it sounds like the gears are buggered....it may cheaper to get a slightly later model than to muck about doing the repair. The latest ABU close face is around £50 new. Have you opended it up? Made sure the spool has "clicked" back into place correctly etc? Quote Link to post
Ossie n Arch 1,683
I took the anti-reverse out of my old ABU. It was a little peice of metal right at the back of the gears. If the reel winds both ways ok, then i wouldn't worry. Iv'e never used the clutch on a reel in my fishing career, much prefering to backwind. All my Shimano's have the clutch tightend right up. But thats just me. Not to sure how the ABU drag worked any way. If the guy you bought it off removed the backwind, then i doubt he would have the peice you need anyway. Probably chucked it like i did. Best of luck with it and tight lines. Arch. Quote Link to post

I can totaly remove the drag nob in the middle of the handle and it still doesn't slip. One other thing! this reel has two line pickups and I'm sure the old 501 I had only had one? atb Jasp Quote Link to post

The clutch on the ABU used to work by backwinding 1/2 a turn so the gears stopped on the piece of metal behind them (That i removed in mine). Then the clutch took over, undoing the knob more made the clutch slip more. But, if the metal peice behind the gears is missing, then the clutch will have nothing to stop on so it will never work, no matter how loose it is. That seems right. What i do know is that everyone who had an ABU that i knew removed the piece of metal so they could backwind. Mine only had one pin as far as i can recall. HTH, Arch. Quote Link to post
Ossie n Arch 1,683
Found this, it explains the backwind bit. 501 only it seems. Mine was a 506, hence why i took it to bits. http://www.maggotdrowning.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=13167 Somewhere selling what you need too. http://jimsreelshop.co.uk/shop/article_5579/5579-Anti-reverse-dog.html .....And a picture. Ossie n Arch 1,683
LOL, i'm on a roll now. Seems you could add an extra pin yourself so the line pick up was faster. Googled it. .........And breathe. Might have a dable on e-bay myself for one. Quote Link to post
