does anyone have any experience of marans. it is a breed i am intrested in but never owned. in general what is their temperament like laying rate etc. any info i would be glad of thanks.

i got a dozen copper maran eggs today to sit under a broody , apparantly a laid back bird .

They're docile enough and lay a reasonable ammount depending on the strain you get and if they've been developed for eggs or show.Speckledy's are a hybrid which look like marans but far outlay the pure breed and can be a fraction of the cost depending on where you source your marans cyril Bason in Shropshire is a decent supplier

I have a pair of speckledy marans. very docile, reasonable layers (not as good as my white leghorns), good brood hens. One of mine is sitting on 6 eggs at the moment. Easliy handled if you have children. Eggs are of a good size, brown with some mahogany specks.

I can well recommend them, but the top layers are the white leghorns although they are very flighty.

if any of these marans hatch i want to cross one with a leghorn , also do a legbar cross leghorn :)
