Ideation 8,217
I have another one from this season. Around christmas i got chatting to one of the guys who runs a shoot on one of the estates that we do the rabbiting on, and he said that his son was keen to come out and have a look at what we did. I agreed and a week or so later, we met Tom, or 'Young Tom' as we named him. Now Tom is a really great kid, a little nervous and quiet at the outset, but spends all his spare time on fieldsports. He rides with the local hunt, sleeps at the kennels to take the hounds out at the break of dawn to exercise them, spends his summer hols skinning dead animals for their feed. Anyway, he's a keen young lad. First time he came out with me and johnnyboy68 on here, we had a good day, no digs, a bag full of bunnies, and the dogs worked well. He was hooked. He came out every Sunday for the rest of the season. Having never handled a ferret before or seen any ferreting done, he was nominated chief rabbit carrier, and fairplay to him he struggled on through rain, snow, and mud carrying them rabbits and never complained once. Not even when he had to sit in a muddy, stream for an hour or so, trying to extract one of my jills from an undiggable set (mind you i did notice him chatting up my missus ). Now the day i'm thinking of was one of the last of our season, and Johnnyboy called in sick with a flu. So for the first time Young Tom and I went out a lone. At the start of the day i told him that for the day he was going to have to fill Johnnys shoes. It was such a great sight, watching the lad who months before had never seen a purse net or touched a ferret, show what he had learnt, and see it all come together. Netting up, collaring up ferrets, entering them, diving on rabbits, re-setting nets, packing away and handling the dog. He even had a wee turn on the spade. I think i was smiling more than him, it was one of the best things ever to watch the lad use all the skills he had learnt from us. And yesterday he left Johnnyboys house with his first ferret, hutch, bedding, water bottle, food, ferret book, nets, and all for free, and in a couple of weeks or so, he will be getting his second ferret from my litter here. And may next season roll on The lad has even got us a pile of new permission Quote Link to post

NEWKID 28,276
2 from last season really stick in my mind the first was my lads first trip out, the day started off ratting but after a nightmare start where we had to cut loads of brambles back we only bolted on rat. My lad was getting bored so I suggested getting the ferrets and having an hour on a small bury close by. My lad helped with netting up, putting on the collars and when he caught his first rabbit you could tell he was hooked. He insisted on carrying it back to the truck The second was special for me because it was the last time I went out with a very close friend before he passed away, he was the first person to take me out as a kid with the dogs and ferrets and I owe him loads. My brother and my lad came out as well, and although my friend was very ill by then we had a great day and remembered all our old trips out. It was a beautiful morning a good frost to start then the sun come out and it was t shirt weather we managed 18 rabs too so it was a nice final trip for him. It's a day I wont forget for all the right reasons Quote Link to post
