Gaz_1989 9,539
My 9 month old lurcher seems to have developed dandruff over the past week. He is smooth coated and has a lovely shiny coat but has developed white flaky bits mainly around his kneck. He is fed raw 90% of the time and diet hasn't changed since he was a pup. Only change is he has always had the odd tin of oily fish and hasn't for a few weeks but wasn't sure that this could be the sole cause? Any ideas? Gaz
MissRhianL 70
Hiya, dandruff can be a cause of many things nothing serious its nothing serious to worry about thing with the last few days we have had some very warm weather it can dry the skin out a little causin it to flake, try keepin him in the shade on warm days or walk him wher theres a river near by to hydrate the skin but sometimes i have used on mine 'herbal essence' shampoo the jasmine one. People say dont use it on the dogs but ive always used it an it hasnt affected them one bit prob 3-4 times a yr they get bathed with the stuff its great for ppl who got dandruff too. All the best butty
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for reply. I didn't think it was anything to worry about to be honest but it looks crap, especially with him being in such good shape and normally having a gleaming coat. I guess it could be the weather. He loves sunbathing and will rarely return to shade when the sun is out. Thanks for the tips. Gaz
MissRhianL 70
My dogs have it i use an hacksaw blade to brush them down it pulls all the dead fur off real well an also off bits of dandruff to go with it.
martnmagik 68
hello gaz. the pups looking well by the pic in your avatar. have you started him off yet at all?
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks MissRhianL will give your suggestions a try. Mart - He was 5 months in that pic. He has done some growing since. He hasn't has anything yet but I haven't really encouraged him. We have seen a few bits out on walks and he has given chase, he is certainly keen. Took him lamping twice at the back end of last season just to watch. They are 12 months in september aren't they, so I will let him watch for the first month of the season and then start letting him have the odd run himself. Drop me a PM with your email or number mate cuz I don't get on here much anymore. Gaz
Ratreeper 441
my rottie would get quite bad dandruff at times, so i tried some dandruff shampoo from the shop. I think they assume you will be using it all the time though for it to work, so it's useless for most people. I ended up getting some from the vet at about £30, but sorted his skin out very quickly and i only used it twice. I think it's expensive and hate giving money to vets, but i would hate to be itchy so I wouldn't let a dog be uncomfortable either.
