Airgun Repair.

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was having a dig through the old gun cabinets and discovered two air rifles, both in need of repair.

The first is a HW80. Seems find, apart from, when you go to cock the rifle, there is no resistance, and when the barel is closed back up, there is no air and pulling the trigger does nothing. Any ideas? I was thinking a broken spring? Or seals gone?

The second rifle is a Sharp Innova, little pump rifle, which again seems fine apart from, you can pump it, and when you pull the trigger, there is no air, no shot. Again i was thinking it's probably the seals?

Now i have feck all knowledge on the inner working of air rifles, but quite fancied fixing these two up to working condition, rather than have them wasted in cupboard.

Sounds like there is no spring in the 80 bud! Even a broken spring would produce some resistance.

Of course the cocking shoe may have come out which would produce same.

Regarding the pumper, many of the pump ups require that they are cocked before pumping. Give that a try and PM me your email addy, I've a useful bit of info for you

Cheers mate,

The HW80 did have a spring at one time for sure, as i used to hunt with it.

When did they first make these guns as it must be well over a decade old?

Just had a wee tinker with the sharps, seems with a few pumps it does charge up, but then when the trigger is pulled the air sounds like it just leaks inside the breech?

Sending email now matey.

Useful Dave, cheers. . . . .

Having just taken the HW80 apart i have discovered that the cocking arm had jumped out of its wee holder thing, and it looks simple enough to fix, although i am having trouble detaching the barrel.

Hi, mate.

It's a bolt that holds the barrel on those and if you look through the slot where the screw driver fits you'll see one of them is actually a nut. This must be undone first as it locks the bolt into place. Once that's off you can then unscrew the bolt. Also, if the cocking linkage has come out of it's retaining shoe, the shoe's fecked and must be replaced. It's a common fault on HW break barrels.

There'll also be a couple of thin steel shims between the breach block and the inner jaws, be careful they don't fall out and get lost.

Those old Sharps need a little silicon oil on the seals otherwise they dry out and cause the problem you've described. Put a few drops around the loading bolt and also on the seal that you can see when the pump's fully open. It's the main seal that compresses the air. Work the pump and the bolt to get the oil around and try again. The Innova doesn't have to be cocked to take a charge.

Hope this helps

Cheers.

Cheers Andy.

I have removed the bolt, and the barrel, keeping the wee shims.

The cocking arms clips into the shoe.

The only problem is i now cannot re-asemble it as i dont seem to be able to line up a clear hole in order to screw the bolt back through!

So i now have a HW80 sat in front of me in 3 pieces and i'm stumped!

Jai.

What do you mean about the Inova? When i pump it and then pull the trigger, i can hear the air escaping inside the rifle, and only a little comes out the barrel.?

They can be a sod to line up the barrel, bolts and shims on those but keep at it, it will fit. Don't try to do it with the barrel in it's closed position though or it'll never fit.

It really does just sound like a case of dry seals on the Innova, Jai. Get some silicon oil in there and give it a go.

Edit to add.... It the link on you 80 has fallen out once, it WILL happen again and that can cause damage to yourself and the gun. Fit a new one, mate, they're very cheap

Sound mate cheers for that, i'll hunt down a new shoe for the HW80, any suggestions where?

Also with regards to the seals on the innova, would they need replacing as well as oiling?

Right! Think i got the HW80 sorted. Someones going to replace the cocking shoe, give it all a service and clean for 30 quid!

With the sharps, having looked, i think the seals DO need replacing and they can be got still, but only from the states, costs about 30/35 quid.

Might stick it up for sale in the state it is. Or might get the seals and sort it and then sell it.

Then need to decide between the HW80 thats currently in pieces and a webley vulcan i have here in working order. One will stay and one will go.

Hull Cartridge are the main HW importers but any gun shop should be able to get hold of one.

Your Innova may well need a new seal set but more often than not when the problems you've described develop it's simply because they've gone dry and started to leak.

Ok mate, i'll try and give it an oil! The only bad thing is that when it first happened i cannot remember, if a pellet was put into the chamber or not. . .. So i need to try and sort that out if so.

Gives me something to do! And i could do with a wee bit of extra cash.
