gnasher16 31,602
i think them days are gone mate eubank benn plus loads of others cant see where the nxt few generations of boxers will come from --- at 23 my lads just done the shift from am boxing to kick boxing more youngsters goin down that path these days the boxing club he let had 23 members the kick boxing club 82 he`d gone as far as he could go in am boxing at 23 he was old .... kick boxing some of em are in thr 30s ... gnas and gto whats your views on the am scene to say 10 - 15 year ago .. Personally i think its an area thing....i could name you at least 6 or 7 gyms within 2 square miles of East London....go to another area you wont find any....probably the same up Liverpool way some areas just maintain good traditions in boxing and some dont. The whole mma thing hasnt really taken off here for that reason, its more of a trendy thing.I do think theres too much rush these days to go into the pros but thats just the times we live in,20 years ago talented youngsters stayed amateur for much longer whereas today you have 18 year olds signing their careers away chasing fame and fortune instead of learning their trade the right way,the amateurs is an important stepping stone in any fighters career. That Degale/Groves fight tonight is a good example, them 2 boys are still pups but they are being exposed to high profile fights already. gnasher16 31,602
i agree gnash i think there pro jorney will be a short one but if they are selective in there match making they can earn a crust , warren is a surviver and i agree with you on his experience do you ever hear anything of old micky duff I havent spoken to him for a few years,Jimmy Tibbs is a friend from years back i know he phones him occasionally just to make sure he,s still alive ...he turns 82 next month last i heard a few months back he,s not in the best of health so what with the recent sad losses in the sport its probably on the cards unfrotunately. gnasher16 31,602
HE took us all for a meal when he sighed holligan great company and the tale he told he said the best boxer he ever had was a certain JOHN CONTEH , but he never reached his full potencial , the birds and the booze etc eh Great talent John Conteh he was a bit before my time but i remember his second fight with Chris Finnegan....both the Finnegans were some of the physically toughest men i ever saw as a youngster i remember their fight at Wembley Chris got stopped on cuts i remember being shocked that he could be hurt and cut up like that Conteh went on to bigger things of course....dont know if your aware Mickey Duff actually lost out on Conteh to Don King of all people,Conteh wasnt happy with George Francis training him, went looking for a new trainer and in stepped King.He did end up back with George for the 2 Saad Muhammed losses though.Good fighter Conteh
