Looking for advice for .22 ammo

Only one way to find out mate. No two guns are guaranteed to like the same ammo. Buy 200 apiece of every different make you can get and see which suits you and your gun best. Plus when you decide, buy as many rounds from the same batch as you are allowed on your FAC. Even successive batches from a given maker can give different performance.

Serious target shooters go for batches of 5-10,000 at a time!

Ric is spot on there. 200 apiece might be a bit expensive, boxes of 50 will do. Put a few of each through the gun just to "wear it in" and get used to it, so you don't use up the whole of one batch.

Then print yourself off some targets and spend time seeing what shoots best. 50 yards is quite a good distance to use for this as it is far enough to widen your groups out a bit.

Personally I would only use subsonic ammo (subs).

You might find that some makes chamber quite tightly but they should all "fit" in theory (I cannot use Ely or CCI, too tight).

What you want is the make that shoots the tightest group, the most accurate. Now zero your chosen round - I find a 50 to 55 yard zero best but there are plenty of different opinions.

Once you have settled on that particular bullet, as Ric says, buy a few boxes (500 rounds?) of that batch and stick to it.

Set up a string of targets at 10 yard intervals from 20 yards to 80 yards (measure accurately, not paces) and shoot 4 or 5 round into each target, aiming exactly at the bullseye every time. That will show you how the bullet drops with distance and will be unique to your combination of shooter / gun / bullet. If you use sheets of A4 paper as targets you don't need to print anything fancy. Mount the target vertically with the bullseye in the top quarter as you need to leave space to show the drop and at 80 yards it could be about 3 or 4 inches.

Make a note of the drop with distance and keep this for future reference, it is invaluable. Maybe as you progress you could try shooting a bit further but really that is best left for the HMR (you've nearly got one gun, time to save for a second :D )

Enjoy your shooting, please spend a bit of time shooting paper before you start on animals, too many people don't.
