Guest Rabbiteer
I put up a thread the other day saying that I am working some of britains worst rabbiting ground LOL. So I thought I would put up some pics of the plot to show you how I use snaring to control the rabbit population coming accross from the quarry next door. This is not a how to, and im not an expert (far from it). Im interested if anybody else has some bad permission and to see how they set about snaring it. I have taken my snaring partner out with me on this occasion. Ist pic is of the land in general. It is bordered on 3 sides by public walk ways and council recreation land. Next door I have a deep chalk quarry. Everyone must have a farmer that they wish to keep sweet and stay in favour with. Well this is mine, this farmer Mr X holds a lot of influence in the area. The fence line stops and turns at 90 degrees to the field I work. At this point I can no longer snare it as it is outside of my permission. 2nd Pic is of the fence line and the quarry. I have between 6 feet and 12inches of land inbetween the fence line and the field. The phot is taken looking from the turn in the fence. 3rd Pic is of the problem that I have, I cant ferret it as i dont know where the other exsit holes are. 4th and 5th pics show how I mark my snares on this field. It is easy and and blends in quite well with the ground. 6th pic is of a typical run under the fence. I have blocked up all minor runs with flint and try to concentrate the rabbits down the remaining major holes. This means I get to put out less snares. These snares were set very late (1600hrs) as I wanted to get away from the visiting kids to the house. Pic 7 & 8 show this mornings catch, only one rabbit for four wires. But, I reckon that is probably due to the lateness that I set them. They were checked this morning at 0600hrs. The last pic shows my fence snaring kit in the back of the motor. My wife goes mad at me when I go out because the car is not even two weeks old and has only done 1000miles. I would be interested to hear about and hard plots that any of you guy's have and how you work them. Take care, Quote Link to post
Mitch 0
Very Good thread mate, I also have similar ground to you. Feck all grass and a few decent runs under some fences, That i can see. However they are too wide for a hole loop too cover. So i need some advice from the Pro's!!! Peg, Woodga and Snareman We know you boys can snare this land so we need some tips My rabbits seem to dig under the Mesh fences but the run is a good 300mm wide What about bushing the snare up? i ave tried this but the wires get knocked. I will try with some stones next time. How do you assess the area you are about to snare? Its a learning game, but can be very frustrating I know because I often check my wires to find Feck all. Especially when the runs are similar to yours Rabiteer!!! Good Luck I hope you master this game, Quote Link to post
Guest Rabbiteer
I did have a run similar to what you discribed. So I narrowed the appature that the rabbits come through with flint and some natural objects. Let them get used too it over a few weeks then snared them again. It worked for me. Would be interested to hear what the Pro's reccomend. take care, Quote Link to post

Guest Rabbiteer
I hate it when I give the people the chance to say I told you so.......... But upon checking my snares tonight two were missing. I will change the marker towers in the morning and start looking for sites to make better runs. I will leave some snares out to weather and so they show up a bit less. It was the two most visable ones that went. I reckon I may have had a catch during the day and some do gooder was walking their dog on his land and seen the snared rabbit. Thanks for the tips, Take care, Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
good going, i havent snared chainlink fencing before. There is a bit by a railway banking that i used to do when i first started snaring (getting 1 or 2 a weekend) one night i shone a lamp up and seen 40 or more bunnies in 150 yards x 60 yard wide field. there is a local timberyard that has security lights on all night, so im not sur if it gets quite dark enough on there for good snaring results. although i will be trying it soon Quote Link to post
