how good are uk hunters??

Recommended Posts

us brits like to think we are good hunters but when i watch programmes on them african, amazon, abbos etc tribesmen it makes me realise how many field skills and how much field craft we have really lost  yes we hunt with our "superior" methods to them but in reality they would last alot longer in our environment than we would in theirs!!! how many could light a fire with no matches/lighter??? how many could stalk and kill a deer with just one spear??? we think were hunters but in truth if ,right now, we had to go back to true hunting without ANY mod cons most on this site would starve   just a thought i had peeps as a real "hunting life" is when you totally depend on eating what you kill

My opinion is when you are relying on your skills for the survival and day to day living of yourself and family.....rather than using your skills as either a job or a hobby, those skills are tweaked to a far higher degree.....also as with many other skills.....what is learned from experience and passed down from generation to generation is usually better than what is learned from books or courses.

I make no claims of any great hunting prowess and certainly wouldnt stand a chance of surviving if " it was for real " :icon_redface: ....hence,watching and learning from the type of programs you mention i find all the more fascinating.

There is a major difference between the our modern western societies and the more tribal/aboriginal societies with respect to hunting. We in the west hunt for the sport/enjoyment and the ways in which we hunt reflect that, whereas those tribal communities that hunt to survive have no concept of sport its all about the kill and the carcas. Neither is better but what Im saying is our methods of hunting havnt really been developed to increase our ability to survive they have evolved into our modern 'fieldsports' to provide us with a sporting way of hunting.
