big rabbits

Recommended Posts

Discussion started in the bar last night :drink: The subject being is there anyone running big rabbits with dogs that haven't got saluki blood in them, with success? The mate mentioned he had heard or read somewhere that there was a guy called "Stat" who coursed in the mid nineties on the fens with a line of dogs that had no saluki blood in them, with a great degree of success. I was extremely skeptical of this, as an avid courser I would find it impossible to be taken seriously if the dogs hadn't got the serious wind that the saluki provides. I've seen a lot of dogs (especially in Ireland) Harrier hound x greyhound, Collie, Irish Terrier, Deerhound, even Borzoi crosses and none have come close to the saluki for Lord Mares. Now before being inundated with protests - I'm being specific about this, dogs that excelled on big rabbits not part of the "all rounder" stuff? Was wondering what the coursing men thoughts, stories are on this?

depends where your coursing mate. if its down the fens then theres

nothing to touch a saluki cross.cow parks are adifferent story as alot of

saluki crosses are to coursie and just follow a big r to the cover

i own a whippet x grew that thrives on this type of ground

but would fail miserbly on big ground.

A hare is a hare. Suppose there is a different style to each dog, but was thinking about these dogs without saluki blood, how long would a good course last? How many runs would you get out of a dog? I hear the Irish lads shout about a bitch called "Irish Lady" that has thrown some good pups, and did well on the fens and there was no saluki blood at all in her, although her pups are all saturated with it.

ive got a bitch shes 6 past with a gammy leg now but in her prime big feidls were i stay, small feilds in cover she would catch hares regulary shees line bred collie grey and whippet , i could take her out tommorow she would die trying , her longest run was at a local coursing meet just a few mates and a few guys from the usa she put up a hare and caught it after a 2 minute 40 second course which is good for were i hunt as most dont go out in the middle of feilds in day light , all the rest of my dogs that are decent hare dogs are saluk crosses even tho on good ground the grew i have takes a bit of chaseing she has good stamina and can strike like a cobra and has running sense , i wouldnt go by my saluks for hares in open land ,localy ,

pre ban, we were working a collie/grey x bull/grey

ran 5 hares in two fields.... caught the first, missed second caught third. missed 4th and 5th,. this was single handed.

we ran about another 4 or 5 hares that night missed them all, as we only had the one dog..... for some reason we never returned to the area  most probably because when we were lamping off the van, we accidently took a wrogn turn and ended up in the farmyard :icon_eek: where a collie greeted us with a good few loud barks
