darkangelwitch 0
Hi, I have just joined this forum as I am a proud new owner of a 1 year old Patterdale terrier (found him in a dog rescue in Sussex). Although I do not hunt I thought this might be a good place to get tips and advice for training him as he has had very little lead training (fixable) but the main problem is that on or off the lead all he wants to do is chase and hunt EVERYTHING and I have no clue how to channel this instinct or how to ensure he listens to the recall command, hence I really really need some help He is a lovely little dog, house trained, affectionate, dog friendly (we have to other rescue dogs) but outdoors !!!!! a nightmare

darkangelwitch 0
Headstrong is an understatement but I will do whatever it takes to ensure he does not end up in the dog rescue again - this little terrier is here to stay

Durham(kev) 1
Sounds like there is no quick fix there,Rules And boundaries and in force them chasing is a nightmare took a while to get my spaniel out of coursing things as its a working dog sometimes you want them to chase wounded game so i trained them to stop on one whistle blast, but i have never heard of a terrier doing that.aslong as teh pup does not go to ground (inside a rabbit hole) i would not worry to much
Durham(kev) 1
oh and never go out without biscuits in your pocket once he knows you have food in there,he will be abit more faithfull to you.but only treat him when you call him back if he dos not come go and get him give him a good telling of by grabbing his neck and shakeing him as this in forces you to be a pack leader in dog world thats what dogs do,it wont hurt him and never tell him off when he comes back in his own time as,if he comes back to you shouting he will just get worse.so only tell him off with you getting him but dont chase as he`ll think its a gane just walk up calmly the grab him.i think this makes sense
