Repro Bullfinch Trap

Recommended Posts

John,

There has been a few different types of those on there recently, some with multi-cages - I think that batch was made in Portugal. They are light and not badly made but they are not of the same quality as the older hand made ones I have seen. The French seem quite big on them - presumably to eat the captives - and refer to them as trebuchet traps.

Ye say 'Repro', John? I'd suggest 'contemporary and utillitarian' :(

The sort of thing DW shows us is beautiful. Guys made shit like that when everyone was freely using them and a man might want to show a bit of 'Class'. Bit like the differance between a scrap of bailer twine or an engraved leather, silver fitted latch slip lead.

Last I ever bothered to check, Bullfinches could still be captured, quite legally, in some parts of britain. Down to circumstances, of course. But an apple orchard owner in Kent could be liscanced, eg.

But, again, last time I took any notice, such 'Cages' were simply being made out of pressed 'Twilweld'. Did the job at half the trouble to the maker - probably cost the mug buying them as much though!

In my day we hit the middle ground. Cut up old 'Budgie Cages' and wired the bits back together again using stripped out household wire flex.

Point is; These various 'Bird Traps' hitting the Bay this last few years, mate? Just like sending Red Cross parcels: They're to be snapped up by the f*cking in commers who, in their home lands, catch and eat Anything that gets on their ground :censored:

Trap Collectors want old, authentic and with a bit of traceable history. 'Bird Catching Historians' will appreciate the elaboratly crafted show pieces. Pricks out to eat what ever they can catch in their enclaved back yards will look for something workman like and which they recognise as being what they used to buy down the road.

That's why the big market in this sort of shit on the Bay nowadays
