moonlighter 1,165
Alright chaps..Ive recently got myself a .17 hmr and set my scope up using red tipped hornady ammo, as thats what thw shop sold me when i got the gun. At 100 yards i was grouping 5 shots to within less than an inch. went out lamping a few times and got on alright. Then when my ammo ran out my local gun smith only had blue tip hornady ammo. i went out and missed every i shot at!! so the next day i went on the range to see what was going on and these ammo still group to about an inch, but about 5 inchs away from the reds!! so what do you chaps use and should i go back to the red tips or re-sight my gun for the blue tips? Any info/help appriciated. cheers. Quote Link to post

masmiffy 82
Was told by a friend who has an HMR that all 4 'brands' of ammo is made in 1 factory! Namely CCI in Idaho. This link seems to prove the point http://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_17HMR_ammo.htm Quote below from text on the link site. 'The load specifications and bullets used in the various brands vary, however, so it would be a mistake to assume that all four brands will shoot equally well in any given rifle' I guess as with all guns once you find pellets / bullets that work with your gun / barrel try to stick with them for consistent results? kingnewport 19
Blues and reds are different weights , find the best one and stick to it. IMO Hornady are the best fo the cz. Cci are crap 1 Quote Link to post

Cci are crap The Blue Tip Hornady was Origanaly loaded in the .17 Mach2 (.22 Rim-Fire necked down to .17) and the Red Tip .17 HMR (.22 WMR necked down to .17) as the .17 Mach2 has not really took of they loaded the Blue Tip into .17 HMR. They are the SAME WEIGHT (17grms) the ONLY Difference being the colour. In the USA they have in the past been White and Orange Tip's. But i have seen that NOW you can get a 20grms V-MAX ??????? dadioles 68
I get quite confused by Hornady ammo and tip colour. The ammo which I find suits my Anschutz best is the Hornady red tip 17gr V-max. But.... A while ago there was the same ammo supplied at a lower price with blue tips and my dealer told me that the stuff with blue tips was identical to the red tip (and this proved true when I shot with it) but it was being sold cheaper because they had made it with blue polymer "by mistake", or had run out of red or da di dah.... The latest batch of red tip that I have just bought has a slightly muddy red colour rather than clean bright red and again they are being sold at a reduced price. So it is anyones guess just what the truth is here. I don't care what colour it is. I know that it is said that all of this .17 HMR ammo comes from "the same factory" but the different brands, CCI, Winchester, Remington, Hornady etc. do differ in accuracy and velocity and some suit certain guns better than others. It may be the same factory but not the same formula. You only need to try a box of each to prove this. Just lately I have noticed some of my groups widening out slightly, I tend to blame myself for the inconsistency but the ammo may be playing a part here. Today I have been shooting targets with the muddy red tip ammo and groups have been slightly wider than one inch at 100 yards and nearly the same grouping at 140 yards. My best group of 4 shots was 0.7 inch at 140 yards. The worst 4 shot group was just under 2 inches at 140 yards. Not bad but I usually do better, certainly sub 1 inch. It is the lack of consistency that irritates me. Never mind the other brands... What is the real truth about Hornady 17gr V-max and price / tip colour / quality / performance. I think it is the best but..... Les Quote Link to post
thomasc4329 10
I hace a cz varmint 452 and i use federal and find them very good group under an inch at 100m and i find them easy to find in any of my local gun shops and even with different batchs the point of impact never changes much at all Quote Link to post
andy s410c 61
No difference in my .17 with Hornady red/blue....it's the same round as far as i'm concerned. They've finished the blue tips & the yellow tip is in vogue for 2011 don't know how much extra that'll cost Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
I rang Hornaday in USA today. The bullets they produce with either red or blue tips are all the same weight just different colour plastic inserts. They send these to CCI who use them in making the 17hmr ammo. Hornaday confirmed that CCI make 17HMR rounds for various companies them included. They could not confirm the powder charge or type used for the ammo would be the same for all brands. This may well affect the ballastics of the different brand ammo. Check out the earlier link I posted for the ammo report from a guy in USA Quote Link to post
