My dad has told me i need to get a saturday job  As i am a lazy b*****d i am not looking forward to it, but then i thought why not get a part time job in pest control as it is something i would enjoy, just some weekend work and some evenings maybe nights, what would be the best way of getting a job in pest control i have contacted the pest control department of my local goverment already and should recieve a reply in three working days, Any advice from pest controlers on here would be helpfull.

Ginge; Sorry, mate. I actually did reply to ye post there, as soon as it came up. Only the f*ckin forum threw a wobbler and I lost the lot, then had to dash out. Lost track as well as the heart to go through it all again.

Bottom line mate? In my honest opinion; Cellophane rat in hells chance.

Ye can accept that as read. Or ye can pursue me for my reasonings, which I'd duly repeat. But, in a word, pro' pest control tends to be, by its very nature, a bit of a one man job. Not for 'Loners'. Simply that it only takes one guy to do the work.

Where it becomes a task for more than one? It'll either be damn hard, ugly graft - shovelling and scrubbing disease ridden shit off propertys. It'll be highly specialised - hanging nets and such, to prevent the shitters getting back. Or it'll be a job which requires specialist training and qualifications: Both the above, and much of the rest this job entails.

Ye might see the kiddies spamming the various fora with, " Free Pest Control Undertaken! ~ I'm a kiddie with an air gun and a Dog. I'll come and take pops at ye rabbits and smack the odd rat " style stuff? Doesn't pay. Isn't " Pest Control ". Not quite what ye Dad has in mind.

I have to agree with Ditch on this matter.

i run my own pest control busines and i can tell you it is a lonely hard job. not like a bit of sporting hunting. you take the rough with the smooth, the good weather with the bad, none of this ''oh its raining think i will stay indoors today and watch tv"" you have to get out there to earn your wage and satisfy your legal obligations. Like ditch said most jobs are carried out by a single person which is something alot of people forget, the solitude. In saying that it is this solitude that i and most find to their likeing.

I was asked by a feller on here a few mths back how come if i work full time is it that im on here some mornings and some evenings, and sometimes during the day? simple realy. Pest control is not a 9-5 job and with that being the case i fit in my plesure time as and when i can. Ask the wife about the late night call outs, one min im in bed cuddled up to her, next im sitting in a cold van sipping tea in a vain attempt to wake up as some customer has called you out to deal with a single rat that has got itself trapped in her kitchen. sounds good bit its 3.30am and by the time you get home its 6.30am, time to get up and start checking your traplines.

A lot of hard work with late nights and early mornings, its not all about sitting looking out a 4x4s sunroof with your rifle lamping rabbits, thats the cream of jobs. But with that said it can be a very rewarding job if you want to take your time and learn this time honoured trade.

Getting a start with a firm, well that is the hard part. IMHO you would maybe be better to try asking your local shoots if thay need a saturday helper with the shoot and work into pest control that way.Gain some experiance and go prove to people that you are willing to work, it goes a long way. This is how i started over 25yrs ago and i must admit its been a long road ive traveled but it has been a pleasant one.

All i can say is dont be put off by what myself and others have said but, be reasitic in your mind that getting a start is not that easy so if you are lucky in your search, grab it with both hands and do all you can to hold onto it as chances like that dont happen very often.

Good luck Ginge and if you realy want it you will find it. ;)

i went after a career in pest control.... there is alot of exams to sit so you know what ingredients etc are in the chemicals and stuff you use... the course they were puttin me on was an intense 6 week 'carry on' that finished with the main exam over in manchester... alot of the courses were to insure that when useing poisons and stuff you knew what to use and where to use it... public health is at risk and for that reason alone it will be unlikely that you will get a bit of saturday work for a bit of pocket money...

You'll need to invest a fair bit of money if you want to go in on your own, for gear and qualifiactions. Most firms won't take part timers as the full time wages are shit enough as it is.

The law is getting tightened all the time so you need to seriously familiar with it's application to pest control.

What do you know about rats, mice and insects? Swot up because that'll be the bulk of any work you get.
