My son has brought a laptop & he says its wireless.. and it connects to the net by putting in a code off the modem on the main pc which isn't a wireless one & he can get on-line that way .. I cant see how that can work as i don't have wireless broad band .. all i want to know is he right or has he got to get one of these dongle things for internet access for a laptop

He'll need a dongle or you'll need to get a wireless modem router. There are other ways, but those are the two most basic ones.

Thanks Mal what other options are there he can do

You could use the existing internet connection from the main PC. (shared connection) It would either have to be wired (defeats the object of having a laptop..) or you'd have to make your existing PC wi fi capable.

You could try contacting your internet service provider and enquiring about wireless broadband. Most of them issue a wireless router for free once your original contracted time has finished. You'll have to sign up for another contract though, most of them are 18 months now I think..

by installing a wi fi card or using a USB dongle.

so if i got a wi fi dongle i can run a desk top & laptop off that ?

Sort of. The desktop would be using your existing connection, and would allow the laptop access to the 'net through it. The downside would be that you'd have to have the PC on while using the 'net on the laptop. Your best bet would be to get hold of a wireless router.

Confused here,

If you have a router supplied by your broadband provider, ( mine is BT) it should allow at least 2 pcs of any type to be connected without both being swithced on. Only the one in use should need to be switched on.

How old is your router, and who is your supplier. If it's less than a year old, it wil probably have wireless already .

Hope that Helps

Tim

Apologies, just re-read your post and all makes sense re having the main PC on
