fatpat 7
If a breeder was to start from scratch, say for instance using one stud dog with prehaps 10/12 unrelated bitches, would it be possible to produce a solid breed ? how far do you think you could line/in breed before an out cross would have to be brought in ? and would it be a dog or a bitch / what do you think gents ? BULL 100
If a breeder was to start from scratch, say for instance using one stud dog with prehaps 10/12 unrelated bitches, would it be possible to produce a solid breed ? how far do you think you could line/in breed before an out cross would have to be brought in ? and would it be a dog or a bitch / what do you think gents ? if you have one sire and two dams and follow a strict line breeding program it can take 7-8 generations to reach homovigosity which will produce a level litter true to type it can . then another strict breeding program which in volves an out cross to one of the earlier generations bred and put back into the line when needed for a slight imput of new blood if your line becomes to close i.e bitches getting bigger than dogs and other genetic traits not wanted these should be culled. again its trail and error but you need a bloodbank from the most importaint dogs as accidents happen dogs die and some dont make the grade . gnasher16 31,602
If your talking about the theory of breeding then you can change 1 pure breed into a completely different breed within 6 generations.....or to the point where the % of the pure breed drops below 1% which is 6 generations....but the reality of the animals in front of you is that it takes a lot more than that.....and thats from a purebred dog......if you are inbreeding off crossbred dogs you can safely double that whereby 2 littermates can be virtually genetically unrelated due to the way genes fall. It really all depends on the breeding of the foundation dogs you are using as to how long before they breed to type....if they are tight bred dogs it certainly wont be as long as if they are scatterbred or crossed dogs themselves.....in other words the more variables you have in the mix the less predictable the genes they reproduce.......whereas the less variables, the more predictable meaning the more they will produce to type.....hope that makes sense.
