19powell90 89
Hey, ive recently bought a hw97k topped with a hawke 3-9x50 scope and im having trouble with zeroing and using mil-dots. Here are my questions: At what distance shud i zero at, my booklet with the scope says 100 yards is this too far? At what zoom ( 3-9 ) do i use for zeroing? How do i use my mil-dots? Also ive read that mil-dots are based on 10x magnification but my scope only goes to 9??? Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
H 19, At what distance should i zero at, my booklet with the scope says 100 yards is this too far? Answer: Yes this is too far for a sub 12 ft/lb air rifle. My suggestion is if the rifle is .177. then zero your scope at 30 metres. If the rifle is .22 then zero it at 25 metres. These ranges give you a very good Point Black Range with a 25mm kill zone. At what zoom ( 3-9 ) do i use for zeroing? Answer: Use the highest mag you can on your scope while you can still stay still and not wobble. Once you have zeroed your scope on the highest mag you can, turn down your mag to about x4 to 6 for normal shooting. Ive read that mil-dots are based on 10x magnification but my scope only goes to 9??? Answer: A scope with a mil dot reticule can be used on any mag. You can calibrate your own mil dots on what ever mag you feel comfy with buddy. Once you have done it though you need to stay on that mag to use them to good effects unless you can remember multiple mag aim points. How do i use my mil-dots? Answer: Watch this little clip that i made ages ago to see how to calibrate them and use them buddy. I hope that this helps. Welcome to the section as well buddy Si Edited December 2, 2010 by zini 1 Quote Link to post
johnboy19 38
You have bought a crackin gun mate, nice one. I hope im right here, but if the scope isn't an AO (Adjustable Objective) scope, i think the parallax (some scopes have are paralax adjustable, which mean you can change the focus on it depending what distance you are shooting at) is set at 100 yards, at least im sure i read this recently, someone may correct me. I thinking you can re-paralax non AO scopes, Theres a lot more to zeroing a scope than you will first think, i found this out in time. An airgun isnt really capable of shooting to 100 yards. An ideal zero range for you may be 25 or 30 yards. But start zeroing at say 10 or 15 yards then once zeroed move back 5 yards and so on until you get to 30. Then just keep practicing at that range till you are getting groups say the size of a pound or a 2p coin. Then once you can do this move your target to 35 yards, cross hairs at the target, and measure (looking through the scope) how far below your target the pellet falls, in relation to the mildots on your scope. With regards to your scope, a magnification of 3-9 is fine, i have a 3-12 mag scope and zero at 9 mag. If you were to zero on 9 mag then turn it down to say 4, your aim points would be different, but if you wanted to spend the time you could try shooting on each mag at different distances and take a note of your findings Also, theres a good bit to setting up your scope before you start zeroing, until recently i never thought much of it and just put the scope on and started zeroing, but then i got a new scope and someone helped me zero it in and paid a lot more attention to doing it than i had previously been. He hung a jug of water from a branch with a rope to give us a straight line to aim the scope against, also had a small bubble level attached to the gun so i knew the rifle wasnt canted when fitting the scope. Hope this makes sense and helps you mate John Edited December 2, 2010 by johnboy19 Quote Link to post

19powell90 89
how do i tell if its an adjustable objectice? its a hawke hd 3-9x50. Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Hi 19, If the large end of your scope has numbers on it and turns right and left it will have a AO. Some have side wheel adjusters but i doubt it if your will have a side wheel with a low mag. Si Quote Link to post
19powell90 89
no it has neither of them. does AO make much difference?? Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Not really pal if your sight picture is clear from 10m to 50 metres on the mag you shoot on. if its not its really easy too correct yourself. Si Quote Link to post
19powell90 89
well when im shooting i seem to either focus on the crosshair or target. is this just me? or scope? i normally have to take my eye away for a couple of seconds and try and agen. Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
That means that your scope needs re paralexing buddy. Si Quote Link to post

johnboy19 38
Done a quick search on Google and found this http://www.sheprethairgun.co.uk/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18 Never done it before but i hear its easy to do. You could maybe phone the shop you bought it from and see if they would help, or maybe someone on here might be close enough to you to help John Quote Link to post

johnboy19 38
Yeh might as well, you will get it sorted mate dont worry. This stuff about scopes without AO is all news to me. I did have a non AO scope a while back but was my first scope and didnt know much at all about diff scopes and features. Only reason i know is ive just bought a new gun and the guy told me the scope it comes with has been reparallaxed to 25 yards, didnt have a clue so looked into it and found all that out.
