tillylamp 1,957
hi, just a quick question, what do you seal a cork handle fishing butt with? for example do you put varnish on it? or maybe an oil? your thoughts please, thanks tl. Quote Link to post
Guest arch1
I would have thought leave it be. Never bothered to seal any of my rods, never left that plastic wrapping they put on them when they were new either. I suppose you could varnish it, but would it not feel cold to the touch then? I like the feel cork gives you, much better that Duplon IMHO. When mine got dirty, i just cleaned them with a wet cloth. Thats if i could be bothered. Quote Link to post

tillylamp 1,957
hi mate, thanks for your input, but normally i dont do any thing to them either but on this occasion i have renovated my 30 year old rod from when i was a young boy,i literally stripped the rod bare and rebuilt it back to its original state, there fore i reused the original cork and lightly sanded it back leaving it look new but bare,so i fill it needs a sealer on it to protect it,but what? thanks tl. fishfish 17
personally i would wipe them over with boiled linseed oil, works a treat on knife handles and kuksa's. Quote Link to post
tillylamp 1,957
thanks for your replies guys, boiled linseed oil sounds good to me i will try that, it will look so good when its finished and when i use it, it will take me back to my childhood again,im so pleased. ive re-whipped the new eyes on today and have just started the varnishing!!! so thanks again peeps tl Quote Link to post
events co-ordinator 353
I would leave the handle the way it is that way you have a non slip handle if you use linseed you will always have oily hands when fishing another couple of years down the line sand it again if you want it to look new otherwise let it weather it loooks better as a working rod Joanna on behalf of the MULLETKING Quote Link to post
