zeroing scope

hi i took off my scope to-day to give gun a bit of a clean, replaced it then it was shooting all over the place had a go at zeroing it- had not done it for years as i have only just got back into air rifles and when i bought the gun about a month ago it was shooting ok. my question is is this grouping in the picture ok it was 5 shoots at 30 yards at a 20mm target ( the yellow lines quarter circle ) 3 pellet group an 2 pellet 10mm apart hope you can make sense of this sorry for quality pic taken with mob zoomed in

i would say thats fine!!

if you took 5 shots and placed 3 to the left & 2 to the right deliberately.

then i would say that it is well with in a kill zone @ 30yds and nice shooting

 

if ya took 5 shots together and they have opend up like that,then i would say practise and try and get a one hole group with five pellets

 

so let us know was it 5 or was it 3/2 punk!!

no not on top of one another,that would be to easy!!!!

 

say ya take five shots and they all land in the same location,give or take a few mm.then this would be a one hole group

then you measure the furthest poi,from side to side and then this will give ya your avarage group should be around 12mm 15mm this is what i would aim for pardon the pun

12/15mm well with in 25mm of a bunnys killzone,and definately good enough for hft

cheers for the info davy ,that sounds a bit more possible from me with a little more practice ,you had me worried there 5 on top of each other would be some shooting especially as i was leaning on a fence post takeing them shoots. i used to be able to light a match at 30 yards with open sights years ago :11:

When you say "all over the place" do you mean that it was putting the shots close together but a distance from the point of aim, or that the shots were falling at distance from each other?

 

If the former, then your group should be fine. If the latter however, then you need to make sure that everything is tightened after you took the scope off. A loose mounting screw can cause the POI to move.

i had my target pinned to a 12 inch board the shoots were at least a foot of poi to the right could not believe it that it would be that far out all i did was take the scope of and then but them back on. does any body know how much you can move the crosshairs on a scope whats the tollerence

They can move a fair bit beddyx mate, and this time of year especially, when you come home fron a cold day out shooting, and bring your rifle and scope into a warm room, the reticle crosshairs can move significantly over a reasonable range, with the expansion and contraction effects on metals in markedly different temperatures.

 

You've shot a tight 3-shot group with 2 to right at 30 yards range. Seems pretty fine to me mate, there's nothing wildly off and practice will shrink your groups much tighter more consistently. Certainly don't think you have a scope problem old chum
