hedz31 1,308
Why rush my opinion is it takes 2 to 3 years to make a good dog and 2 to 3 minutes to ruin a potentialy good one just bide your time and let the pup be a pup and mature and enjoy watching it learn instead of pushing it what harm can waiting another 4 to 6 months Excellent reply bobin ginger beard Bobin ginger beard Quote Link to post
watchman 256
iv never slipped a dog less than 10 months old, usually a bit older depending on the dog and if i feel the time is right to try them, sometimes you just get that feeling the time and conditions are perfect to give the dog a successful first outing which is really what its all about for me and the dog obviously. i have heard many lads on here state that they start them a lot younger, yes people do comment on the possibility of a young dog getting injured, frustrated and opening up but they come across as knowing what they are on and do this regularly, obviously must know their stuff but for me id rather wait a few extra months and never had a yapper yet Quote Link to post

runforyourlife 361
Yeah most are giving some good advice. I would say bewteeen 10 and 12months.. Can i ask, for those who say, if you do it to early/young, you will ruin. has anyone got any experience or evidence of this actually happening?? Coz i will hold my hands up and admit i started one of my bitchs rather early, yet she became the best dog i had ever owned. And at 3 was doing all and good at it. Quote Link to post

jf1970 328
don't think there is any harm in starting a dog early, just as long as it is done slowly and the handler has to be patient, I started my dog at 5 mths out ferreting once a week for 2 hrs, just letting her have a look at whats going on, introduced her to the lamp at 7mths old 2 weeks ago, only 2-3 hrs once a week out with a mate and his dog letting her see how it's done, at the end of the night giving her an easy slip, she has caught and retreived a rabbit both nights and caught her first daytime rabbit yesterday while out for a walk, iam no expert but this way has worked for me and my dog, she is 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy, cheers......john Quote Link to post

DEERMAN 1,020
mine go out as soon as their jabbed up,they run and play and learn about getting through things like gates etc, they watch the older dog running, then i start them off on a few hand picked rabbits and go from there, ive got bull crosses i dont let them on things that bite back until i think thier mature enough in head,by the time my young bitch was 12 months she was doing squaders at end of beam, jumping any fence or gate and was a pleasure to have out on a nights lamping. Not evidence as such, but I've seen a few knee ligaments go in youngsters, never seen it happen in older dogs. Quote Link to post
