bedlingtonman 44
Just been lookin in classified and seen a couple of opinions on lurchers on dig so thought it might make a good topic who likes them and why and why not if you dont like them on digs i have 2 lurchers and work alot of piles so i take mine every were but mine also are very obidiant they sit were told and do not move till told very handy on big piles were nets can not be used ....All the best and happy new year Quote Link to post
Guest JOEB
The downside as far as I can see it is that you may bolt a nice healthy fox that if dug to or netted you may have let go to breed or dig another day .........with the lurcher, if it makes the tackle, its all over. JMHO J Quote Link to post

Guest oldskool
before i had a firearms cert. i always used a lurcher to good effect. even now that i have a fac i still always bring a lurcher. its not always possible to use a shot gun!! shotguns are all us boys over here are allowed .. if i have a choice i always use a gun, its a few seconds quicker than a lurcher Quote Link to post

mouse 282
agree with joeb.if you dont have to get rid then they are there for another day.just my opinion and everyone has there own. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
A well trained lurcher is a bonus at a dig and for marking especially .Its the run-amok lurcher that digs at holes and is never in the right place when needed that annoys me .As to the sport aspect ,lol,If a keeper around us thought you were there to enjoy yourself then you'd be out ,lol.Lurchers need to be restained on a slip if a bolt is required as they always seem to be wrong sided if left loose .OMO. Leon 0
Lurcher every time for me unless prying eyes dictate otherwise Quote Link to post
ratkilla 42
In the right area i think lurchers are a great help hunting up and marking to ground and also helping retrive shot game. But as taffy said it's hard enough just with a terrier getting to an earth let alone a lurcher tagging along side. Quote Link to post
Kane 2
I would always prefer to be with a lurcher than without one give a fox half a chance and he will be gone no point in giving foxy any more leeway. As for next years breeding stock LOL there will always be plenty about ask yourt local keeper or shepherd LOL. Yes mate, there will be plenty about, just saying that in some circumstances, you may kill one that otherwise you may have let run....... All the best J Quote Link to post
celt 1
I agree with Taffy that I prefer a decent terrier and a shotgun at the draw, but a lurcher to mark and pick up bolters. With the shotgun it is handy to have a special load for hole jobs, 1 or two pieces of shot with a low powder charge as the barrel is usually on the skull. Celt Quote Link to post
