matt241075 12
Hi all My bitch had a litter of 10 pups 8 weeks ago,all went well with no problems and the pups are all strong and healthy. The problem is this was 8 weeks ago and lately on two ocassions ive noticed tiny bits of blood on the floor after she has got up,both times being this weekend. The bitch(Amber) in herself is fine eating running etc. thanks for any comments. matt
Guest Buttermilk
I'd take her to the vet asap for a check-up. It could be signs of pyometra,or maybe retained pregnancy tissue...both of which can be treated with antibiotics if caught early enough. Good luck..hope she's okay. Edit: Pyometra is a vey serious infection ofthe womb and potentially fatal, so I'd get down to the vet as soon as you can, just to be one the safe side. skycat 6,174
It is normal for a bitch to leak bits of blood, tissue etc after having pups: this can vary from dark red, brownish, even brighter red if the bitch has been running: what is happening is that the uterus cleanses itself and the sites along the walls of the uterus where the pups were attached during pregnancy must heal over and seal themselves up again. What was a lifeline to the pup is no longer needed, for obvious reasons. Very occasionally there is a problem like an infection, but as long as the blood isn't pouring out, (normal is a bit of slimy, stringy jelly like stuff or blobs of the same)doesn't smell bad: there should be no 'off' smell to the discharge, things are fine. In some cases this discharge can continue for as much as 12 weeks after having pups, though it is unusual to last this long. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus and is very unusual in a bitch which has just had pups. It is more common after a bitch has been in season or has been mated and failed to conceive. There are two types of pyometra: open and closed. In the open pyometra the bitch leaks pus and it smells horrible. The closed pyometra is more dangerous as there is no discharge and most owners don't realise there's a problem until the bitch gets ill, with the build up of pus and infection all being kept inside. A bitch will usually drink a lot more water than usual if she has a pyometra. If your'e worried get the bitch to a vet for a check up.

She had a litter of pups who were 6 weeks old and she suddenly went down hill rapidly. She had an emergency hysterectomy and thankfully pulled through...but it was 'touch and go' for 24 hours. Ashover rabbit dogs 76
its quiet normal after such a large litter as the uterus takes time to get back to normal. i can understand your concern about pio, my 11 month old pup had open pio after her first season luckly she never got ill with it the only way to tell was because the discharge she had, she odviosly ended up being spayed. pio shouldnt be under estimated like buttermilk said it can be deadly in a short space of time.
