Hi Sounder mate,

Have a read of this article pal  .

I dont want you doing anything illegal pal

Here are this years general licences for Northenn Ireland mate too.

The one for NI run out last month but it may give you some idea if you want to read it buddy.

If I was to speak hypothetically about your question mate, either a spring piston air rifle or PCP (compressed air from a divers bottle) air rifle producing anything over say 6 ft / lbs would humanely kill a starling if it was hit in the brain at a close range.

66.5 ft lbs? I should think that'll be enough to take care of a starling, Si!

Si. Although the Starling is no longer included on the list of pest species, it DOES still appear on the Irish general licence, and hence can be taken under the terms of that licence in cases where there is risk to public health, or to crops or livestock. Good idea to check it though.

Note also that the licence doesn't cover you for shooting pests on sundays, or the period from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise, and it's illegal to shoot any bird (other than feral pigeons in certain circumstances) using any artificial illuminating device.

At very close range you will probably want something with open sights, to allow very fast target acquisition that will be necessary. Anything with a big scope on will be more of a hinderance than a help. I might almost suggest getting your hands on a .22LR with shot shells, only good for very close range, but easier to hit them with than the air rifle, and less likely to go through walls or roofs than a 12 bore. If it's definitely an air rifle job, then get your hands on a small, lightweight springer with decent open sights, and get used to bringing it to shoulder, sighting and releasing the shot almost instantaneously. Those little feckers almost certainly won't sit still very long when they spot you!

Its better to be safe for the guy than let him fall flat on his face ;)

I hope someone would also look out for me if i was about to make a massive BOO BOO  .

Cheers

Enjoy your starlin bashing session then Sounder, if your needs fall within the general licence boundaries.
