inan 841 Posted September 25, 2010 Report Share Posted September 25, 2010 hi does any one on this site have an opinion on shooting hares with an air rifle? only kiddin I haven't given mine ,just quoted the gidelines,and recommendations ,of the BASC.Which was in response to Festa saying "hares are much easier to shoot with an air rifle than rabbits",and,"the skull on a hare is much thinner than the skull on a rabbit,making it much easier to kill". Really though, what do you think about an airgun's use to shoot hares. I've shot many over the years with them and I've had no more problems shooting hares than I have rabbits. A well placed shot in the noggin does the job just fine. I agree that body wise, they're a good bit bigger than a rabbit but their head's not.... Cheers. I dare say their are quite a few lads on this forum that would only take what they considered to be "responsible" shots at hares with an air rifle ,but I personally do not think it is an appropriate weapon for the dispatching of Lepus. I see what you mean, they're most certainly the biggest animal that any good shooter would consider fair game for an air gun and it's deffo very bad form to give folks the wrong idea as to what they can reasonably expect an air gun to be able to do. SEAN3513 7 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Share Posted September 26, 2010 I remember reading a old book on shotgun marksmanship by Percy stanbury! don't quote me on this as it was a long time ago I read it but I'm sure he mentioned that game birds useing game loads only needed around 2ft/lbs in the swede to stop/kill them , perhaps someone else who has read the book can put me right! I'm sure I'm not far away as to what he quoted... Its interesting if you take the thickness of the skull of a Rabbit/Hare and consider what ft/lbs energy would be expected to kill them cleanly...... jasper65 6 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Share Posted September 26, 2010 i read somthing similar , but, cant remember who by ????? we chronographed shots once...at different yardage with a shoot through chrono results where interesting 12ft/lbs at muzzle = approx 6ft/lbs at 30 yards 10 ft/lbs at muzzle = approx 5.5ft/lbs at 30 yards 12 ft/lbs at muzzle = approx 4ft/lbs at 45 yards 10 ft/lbs at muzzle = approx 2.5ft/lbs at 45 yards cheers sean good stuff sean! what calibre was you useing? you would expect a .22 to hold more energy at range than the .177, if someone done tests with both calibres it would be interesting? whatever the Calibre its still a loss of 7.5ft/lbs on the 10ft/lbs rifle. you would expect a massive loss on say a size 6 shot out to 45 - 50 yds. ok a Cartridge has the quantity to do the damage and leaves the barrel with a fair bit more ft/lbs but seen plenty of birds when plucked back litteraly stopped by a single shot perhaps in the neck or head. goes to show if I'm taking head shots within 35yds who needs 90ft/lbs when accurate shot placement comes above everything else .... atb Jasp Quote Link to post
