Oly 12
Whenever I talk to gunsmiths about snap caps they always give non-commital answers...so, do you use snap caps in your stored guns, and if so what's your reasoning/science behind it?? Quote Link to post

mark.a 0
When you close your gun you cock the firing pins. When you store your gun if you left it cocked it would put a great strain on the mechanism, so you have to let the pressure off by squeezing the triggers. If you hav,nt got a cartridge in the barrels you will be putting excessive strain on the firing pins as they come forward and reach the end of their travel by the rims of pins hitting the ends of mechanism housing instead of the ends of the pins hitting the cartridge and taking the blow as it compresses the end of it. Snap caps simulate this by using a spring loaded cap. I hope this is usefull to you and has answered your question. Quote Link to post
Nobby 65
I use them have done for years was told it takes the pressure off. Quote Link to post
Guest Macnas
I only use them when I have to, just to check function. I don't think it makes much difference, if any, whether or not a gun is stored cocked or uncocked. Snap caps are useful to have and if you have a brass or nickel coated set they look well in a case. But I don't consider relieving spring tension to be all that important. Quote Link to post
Guest baldie
Never used snap caps for storage yet, only for dry firing, and havent had to replace a firing pin, or spring yet, but if it makes you feel better, then do it, it certainly does no harm. Quote Link to post

Millet millet they where specially made to suit your gun so you better not loose them I wouldn't have thought the ejectors would have ejected them, as the ejectors are "set" using recoil, and I can't belive that snap caps give enough recoil do they?? You sure your not just bumping the butt on the base of your cabinet when you put them away - thereby "setting" the ejectors. Having the ejectors "set" whilst stored probably isn't a good thing either!? Quote Link to post

Oly 12
Many thanks for all the replies. Given me something to think about. Still reckon they're benefits are a bit of a mystery though! Quote Link to post
