SNAP SHOT 194
Well while at work yestersday i was inundated with stories off foxes causing caos in the area where i work.... So i decided to keep the farmers happy by putting in an appearance last night, the area has lost 1 peacock, 1 peahen, 14 ducks, 16 chickens, So i decieded to try and keep my permission, to head out and see what was to be seen, i went to the farmer who drives for me, and his friend, we got set up about 11-30 and headed out into the clam night.. After lamping what must of been 20 mins or first glimpse of those tell tale eyes lit up the lamp, With the growth of grass and weeds it made it difficult to track him in the scope...!!!! i ranged it at 171 yards dialed in, and in the hurry plus a sore shoulder (excuse lol) i fluffed it... missed altogether..... i was not a happy bunny... We saw a few more and stopped and got set up only for them to vanish into the hedgerows..... it was starting to look like one of those nights, We drove around for a while and a farmer whose land i don't normally shoot, said to thelads if i could take a look around his place as he's lost a few hen's pull into the lane and on the right hand side in a steep field there's what we're looking for behind the fence.... !!!! grrrrrr 390 yards... not taking the shot we waited till he crossed the fenceline and into our field the steep one.... Watching it bounce about the field at every noise it heard, it was a long wait, As it slow made its way towards another hedge row but always coming closer downwards towards us... but to the right, i tracked it and ranged it at 308 yards, dialing in i get into a comfortable position, forgrting the previous effort, i calm myself and squeeze of the round..... Result.... ranged at final 296 yards.... a cub if this year rather small.... i'm glad to be out and taking care of business... With the night slowly becoming morning, we headed for my local shooting permission, all mostly large fields with alot of hill ground to the back of the farm... driving into his land we see eyes right at the top of one of the fields, with gorse and trees directly up the bank of stone behind it... range as he's nosing through the rocks looking for a tasty morsel... 368 yards....!!!! after not being out for a while i'm thinking should i chance it....??? this farm has 300 ducks, as well as a pen of pheasents....!!!! so i take the gamble, dial in and wait for that moment... the fox flowed over the rocks and rough ground with such elegance i was amazed at its movements.. back and forwards it moved left to right, i give a little squeek, and see it freeze... safety off, squeek, eyes on us, squeeze... thump, right through the front left shoulder, not even a kick from him as he makes his way to that little den in the sky.... looking at my watch and seeing nearly 2am i decide to call it a night, been a long day... just got to srot out the rest now, and next friday may be the night... i don't normally shoot this early unless problems are being caused, but you gotta keep those who give you your permission happy... and with about 1200 plus acres on three farms side by side, its worth keeping...
