mattfergie1 0
I have a 10month bitch Whippet, I took her out lamping with my new lightforce lamp, she chased a few, getting very close but after a while she was giving up half way through the run, I run her on about 10 rabbits, I dont know if this was too many or what. I take her out with my terrier in the day and she usually chases a rabbit or 2. She seems to stalk rabbits in the day, am I ruining her by letting her chase rabbits that she is unlikley to catch. I have 3 ferrets 1 terrier and a gun whats the next step. I also made a lure for her to chase which she does. Thanks Matt Edited August 4, 2010 by mattfergie1 Quote Link to post

woodmat 1
hello Matt, a couple of things, it sounds like your bitch isnt fit, unless your not giving her time to get her tongue back in between runs? and yes try and give her a few sitters to start her off with, and she is still very very young, so just keep at it, and i'm sure it will all come together. You don't say how many times you've had her out on the lamp? It would help her if you could go out with someone with an experienced dog, Quote Link to post

Some say carry on and you say wait. I have a friend that works his lurchers but i think the whippet will want to play with them more than chase rabbits. And what about where i take her in the day, theres lots of rabbits, should i just go to the park so she can have a run around and not actually chase anything, i really dont want to ruin her as ive seen alot of dogs in the beating line getting ruined by an inexperienced handler....which is what i am at the mo.....thanks very much for the help by the way. And what do you mean it'll be sick? Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Sounds like she needs to mature more mate, whippets can often be slow to mature. I'd recommend reading Hellen Hansell/Hassel's book 'The Working Whippet'. Spend time with the dog getting her recall and retrieving a skin dummy etc spot on, get her heeling on a lead, sitting, staying etc. No point rushing the dog and if she has started to give in mid run, then shes been run on too many things she cant catch yet, and is thinking 'whats the point'. If i was you i would avoid running on game for a while and in a couple of months go and walk up some squatters on the lamp on a really wet and windy night and give her some gaurenteed success. And don't go releasing pre-caught rabbits for her - Quote Link to post
