oakey 57
Took the lurcher pup out last night for a bit of a walk i saw three rabbits she saw none to busy sniffing the grass verge .Do you think i should take her to more open ground where she has more chance to see one run ?(she is still only 6 months and a little nervous)dont want to spoil her by rushing it.I will be ferreting this season and im sure she will see plenty then . Guest deerhound hunter
people might say its abit early to be entering a pup ,but when she ready she,ll go,just let her be pup and rest will follow ,but still show her quarry as its a learning curve,i have 6 month pup and just going start ferreting in the next month or so and letting him watch the big dogs..atb with your pup.......dh Quote Link to post
minzy 16
aup mate thats what my dog did for the first few times i took her out she was more intrested it the ground but i dint take her out till she was bout 9months old.. i think 6month old is bit to earley..at 9months old i took my pup out with my old bitch to let her watch my old bitch take a few out...so take her out with a more experience dog let her/him watch the experience dog for a few outing then try to get as close as you can to the rabbit with your dog then slip her/him see what happens she will come on just give it time mate.. atb Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
If she is nervous i wouldn't take her out with another dog. Work on that stuff first, plenty of time for her to start chasing rabbits - worst thing you can do is force it on her, Quote Link to post
oakey 57
Thanks for your help with this .I feel i must explain that i had no intention of entering her to rabbits it was just a walk the point i was trying to make is that while out her nose doesn't leave the floor for very long for a sight hound that is . Casso 1,264
Thanks for your help with this .I feel i must explain that i had no intention of entering her to rabbits it was just a walk the point i was trying to make is that while out her nose doesn't leave the floor for very long for a sight hound that is . If her nose is on the floor the whole time, interact with her , play with her out, let her chase you, a lot of dogs only see the inside of a field when hunting, they learn that once they get through that gate , they switch into hunt mode , try to get the pup responding to you in the field before entering her to game, it cuts out alot of bad habits from forming due to deaf ear syndrome,,best of luck with her bud,, Quote Link to post
