I was told tjhey are wider because as your dog works harder its windpipe expands so it can increase the air flow to the lungs to get them running at full capacity and if they pulled after working it could collapse their windpipe. Not sure if thats true or not but. Another thing..imagine the power your dog creates to run at speeds like it does and then think of the damage a slim collar can do to your dog when it yanks on its lead ..a broader leather collar will spread thhe stress over a larger area
