hi guys do any of you guys run a rabbiting lurcher with a front toe amputated.. may have to have my dogs toe done...... anyone......

there was a threadon this a few months ago and it seemed the general consensus was it is better to remove the problem toe than to have constant lay off/injury ( for the dog!).

i'm no expert and am sure that someone with first hand experiance will give you more help.

 

what is the vet saying?

My old bitch had her first toe ,on her front right foot amputated back to the first digit.this is like having the toenail bed taken out,so the dog still has a pad. She had this done when she was about 3 years old. Her turning ability wasn't really affected, but if she is run hard on hard ground she is still a touch lame the day later. I used Gilbert's at Keswick he really knows his stuff and is reasonably priced too! Best of luck because there is nothing worse than a lame running dog!

I had a bitch had a toe off when she was 8 years old, and at that age cell pack volume etc means it will always take longer to heal than it would on a younger animal..it made no difference what so ever to her ability, in fact she caught rabbits in one night after the even, it took no longer to heal than a jumped toe and she was grafted into double figures of years. Her daughter (not owned by me) also grafted till she was 12-13, she had a front toe and a rear toe off, and there was very little noticeable difference in her ability, and she still holds the record of rabbits caught in one night in the mid to north northumberland area..
