HI.. Im new to the terrier scene i recently got myself a full bred lakelnd terrier. im looking to hunt rats with him and im looking to know what age should i attempt to enter him on a rat and wats the best way of entering him onto rats he is 16weeks old.. i hunt rabbits with my hawks near a turkey farm and their is plenty of signs of rats.. (hawks have caught a few) all information will be very much appreciate

you will be ok bringing him on with small rats [pref captive] but dont let him hunt out big rats untill hes about 10 -12 months old if a big old rat gets him while he young it will put him off for life , you are better of getting a cage trap and catching young ones for him to play with. i start mine off at about 10 weeks with field mice in the bath as they cant jump out and the pups got them enclosed then we move on to young ratsat about 20 weeks and so on , DONT RUSH A PUP IF YOU START THEM TO EARLY YOU WILL RETIRE THEM EARLY TAKE YOU TIME . HAPPY HUNTIN

I dont think you do much ratting?

 

Ive never had a dog that wouldnt do an adult rat at 6 mths

12 mths they are killing like veterans
