Bushing Terrier?

Millet is right Russells from good working stock are superb for bushing,another advantage is colour ,they are easier to see than a dark coloured dog ,a definate advantage when shooting.

agree with the colour thing, better than a red lakie or a grizzle border or my dark coloured teckel x, also easier for a running dog to recognise in a hurry

 

also JRT's are easier to come by and it wouldn't necessarily need to be from digging stock if he just wanted a bushing terrier, in fact a terrier from digging stock could be a problem

 

or how about a spaniel? or a spaniel x terrier? (there has been a few spaniel/terriers advertised on here and M oochers lately)

I would definitely stay away from a Terrier mate. With things the way they are these Days you just cannot afford to have a Dog go to ground anywhere it isn't meant to. If you only want a Dog for bushing etc GET A DOG BRED FOR IT. My advice would be one of the Spaniel breeds, or even a cross of perhaps a Beagle/Terrier, if you wanted a bit of Terrier. Warrener is very successful with the ones he breeds and occasionally has Litters. Just a thought for you to play with.

Knowing your land isn't enough. Certain times of the Year you will find an old Boar dug in somewhere or a Fox under a Huge outcrop of Rocks. Spaniels are not bred to go to ground and the instinct has not been bred into them, plus their size stops them even if they thought about it. Can you risk working a real thick Bramble patch with a Dog that could go to ground. A/ where has it gone in and B/ how do I find it. I wouldn't work thick cover with a dog with a collar on, so locating might be a major problem. Sometimes you may need two Dogs to work a massive area, even bigger trouble if they both go to ground. The Dog in front gets it in the front end and the back end!! Can cause the best of Friends to fall out...depending whose Dog is in the front!
