comanche 3,301
Off to greet the new season in half an hour . Couple of hours fishing from dusk into the dark. Mill stream with sluggish pools between fast shallows . Bream, roach ,perch ,dace ,gudgeon ,eels, jack pike etc and too many bl**dy crap ,er carp. Sooner or later one will eventually pick up the bait . Anything from tiddlers up to something touching a double . Worms ,bread ,maggots . Probably light link ledger or free-lining down the flow . Now do I go for the fixed spool and John Wilson quiver tip or the centre-pin and split cane? You lot decide and I'll bore you with the one that got away later . Quote Link to post

comanche 3,301
Excellent choice Watchman . God it was so much easier when I was kid . None of this bourgois choice of rods .all I had was an old wooden thing with a top section made from a bamboo garden cane with a couple of wood staples for eyes and a 2n half inch bakelite reel . Stillfishing the same bit of mill-stream though ! Quote Link to post

comanche 3,301
Well ,I strolled down to the mill-stream where I quietly tackled -up behind some bushes lest the fish be alarmed by the presence of such a dangerous predator as myself stalking the banks like a chimera twixt velociraptor and heron . The first cast was made toward the far bank and as my free-lined maggot and worm cocktail tumbled downstrean the rod arched over and began to buck in my hands like a water- diviner's wand on amphetamines. After a struggle lasting for well over twenty minutes I managed to land a fish so huge that its removal from the stream caused the water level to drop by several inches . I removed my superbly placed Drennen size 16 from its jaws and reached for my camera . Sadly at this moment the scaley monster flipped from my grasp and hurled itself back into the stream so I have no proof of capture . The ensuing surge of water over the banks washed several sheep to their doom but I managed to survive by clinging to an exceptionally attractive young woman who just happened to have chosen this particular stretch of mill-stream as a perfect place to train for the 2012 Olympic swimming events . She then invited me back to her luxury flat for a bath and "coffee" . So ,some of this might not be true . In fact my first fish was an obliging little brid . This was followed by about 15 or 20 of his little mates. After which one of the stream's greedy carp decided to to give me the run around for ten minutes before taking pity on the old rod I was using and released the strain on its aging fibres by spitting the hook back at me . My next bite came from the tinyest and cutest little eel I've ever seen . At least it indicates that a few elvers are still making it inland . No monsters but I did'nt blank . I did'nt get invited back to the love -nest of a female Olympic swimmer for coffee either but there's always a next time ! Edited June 17, 2010 by comanche Quote Link to post
