cocker 2,655
it will be very difficult to rectify, that fault now, if you want to get into lurchers, you would be better off getting rid of that liability, and getting a 6 week old pup and bringing it up yourself, dogs that are bad with stock, is a serious problem and also this is compounded by your dog being nervous, too be truthful mate, in my opinion you couldnt have a worse introduction to lurchers and hunting, (just my opinion,) all the best cocker Quote Link to post

Good advice that.....It will probably take a while to get her round the way you want her.Three years old is getting on for a dog with no manners but as MATMORGAN quite rightly says Trust and security is the first things she needs and recall is the second. If you can get these up to scratch you should be onto a winner. She may always have a tendency to chase on site if shes been doing it all her life but with trust, respect and good recall it can be controled alot easyer. if you can get the use of quite a large secured area I.e small stock fenced paddock or a large unused Pheasant pen this would certainly make the above easyer. bigbailey 90
Thanks for the reply lads and the advice. Wont get rid of it mate i had it to give it a home as like i said it was a rescue otherwise was goin be put down. Wont be like the last idiot who ruined a dog then passes the problem off. People like that are the reason that the kennels are full of ruined dogs. Shes already good on recall apart from the obvious of once shes chasing u struggle to stop. Quote Link to post

Good on yer mate.....Hat off to you. If she's good on recall you are half way there. If your giving her a home for life you may as well stick with her and hopefully get some sport with her.Don't forget though mate she a sight hound and they were put on this earth to chase so stopping her in full flow will probably always be of the cards. Guest arch1
Good on yer. We have a rescue, and while i'm no expert on Lurchers, iv'e managed to get Ossie to a reasonable level of control. He's not perfect and he goes on a lead when we come across "problems" but we get by. Give the dog a chance and i'm sure you will be alright. If you can get her to come back your well on the way. Good luck with her. Quote Link to post

bigbailey 90
Thanks for that reply mate, didnt think i would be able to stop her like i can my lab. The first time i let her off the lead she flushed 2 rabbits out which i didnt even see, but just missed out. She hadnt been run for 6 months as she had been in the kennels. So her fitness wasnt quite there. Changed her diet and now giving her daily exercise shes comin on. Worked in kennels so advice on passing dogs on i dont agree with. If people are having a pup they should learn how to train it properly not ruin it. Cheers for the helpfull advice lads. Quote Link to post
